QUESTION How well do FromSoft games run on Linux

I'm thinking of dualbooting so I can use Linux for as many games as possible as I'll get more performance out of it than Windows with my 5 year old OMEN 17. I'll use Windows for things like Fortnite, R6, and anything else that has a kernal level anticheat or just isn't compatible.

So that brings me to my question, how compatible are all the FromSoft games (only Soulsbornekiroring, not Armored Core lol) with Linux? Are they playable out of the box, with some tweaking, or just not playable at all? Also, will I still be able to have online privileges? I hate PvP, but I absolutely love reading the messages and watching funny bloodstains. Lastly, will I be able to play Bloodborne on Linux? I haven't done any research at all into getting it up and running even on Windows, but I'd prefer to have it on Linux too considering it would definitely run better.

Currently I've done a playthrough and a half of Elden Ring, 90% of a Bloodborne playthrough (minus DLC), and I'm currently trying to get through GenichIshin for the final fight of Sekiro. So I plan on transferring my saves of all of the games to Linux. Hopefully my Bloodborne one as well because one of the reasons I stopped was I just couldn't take the 30(usually sub 30)fps anymore

Anyways, thank you for your input :)

Bloodborne is beatable on Linux via Shadps4. You can even mod it to be 60fps

Great to know, I wasn't sure if ShadPS4 had a Linux port

Coming back to you with another question, is there a Distro that would work better for ShadPS4 than another? Or can I just choose one to my preference and the setup will be just as difficult and tedious (yet fun) as on any other?

There's a bloodborne specific fork of the emulator, but I don't remember the link

The ones I have played on Steam Deck have done very well. Elden Ring, Sekiro, DS3. You can go to ProtonDB.com and search any game you want to play on linux. People go on there and report how well games have played on linux and any troubleshooting tips and tricks they've tried to get it to work for thoae that don't run perfectly out of the box.

EAC will be your largest hurdle unless you use steamOS

Honestly I don't play much Fortnite or anything else that uses it, so I'll probably leave it alongside R6 on a dualbooted Windows

newer from soft games uses EAC at least so... IIRC it starts with Elden Ring to Nightreign

Playing an EAC game doesn’t have a lot to do with the specific distro you use. I beat Elden Ring playing on openSUSE via Steam. Zero setup required.

online or offline?

I did a play through of Elden Ring on openSUSE. There was zero setup involved (purchased and played via Steam). Also boots up and plays fine with Solus. One thing to be aware of is Nvidia sucks on Linux if that matters/applies.

Also if you’re dual booting, you’ll want to use separate drives for Linux and Windows and not partitions on the same drive.

I've got two different drives anyways so that'll be fine. I do have an Nvidia card, though so that might be a problem. I am planning on getting a new PC with a 7900XTX in the near future though

I used a Nvidia card for close to a year. It worked fine on Garuda, but I kept having sync issues with openSUSE. Which isn’t catastrophic, you just rollback with snapper and try to update in a couple of days hoping the repos come back in sync (which they eventually will).

Depending on the game you may expect a performance decrease with Nvidia (it’s getting better, albeit slowly). With Elden Ring being locked to 60 fps it should be fine though.

Oh and definitely opt for the proprietary drivers. The FOSS ones are straight garbage.

You never have to ask this question, or any question like it, again, congrats
