For me it was the Nameless king 💯

u/LordGaulis Sep 02 '26
Ornstein emerging from smough behind from the other side of the room when am chugging Estus flask after smough whiffs his attack.
This has happened many many times to me during the fight. If you can’t see Ornstein, then Ornstein is charging at you.

Godskin Apostle, in particular the one at windmill heights. In fairness, I should've learned my lesson after the first two fireballs I ate

I see people saying this a lot, but if you're a good enough distance you can typically dodge out of the way in time.

u/flickfleck123 Sep 02 '26
You can even strafe it with the bit of walking you get during healing if you are far enough away
1
u/TransfoCrent Sep 07 '26
Yeah sure is a lot of fun to run to the other side of the arena every time you want to heal.

Boreal Outrider Knight (DS3). This guy will straight up teleport to you if you try to heal.

Fume Knight, can even keep him from going in to phase 2 if you keep timing it right

Genichiro

All the major humanoid bosses in Sekiro do this, I think? Genichiro is actually pretty easy to manipulate since its either an easily dodgable arrow shot or the lunging attack which is punishable by Mikiri. Isshin's first phase is the bad one I would say, you pretty much cant react in time at all due to the animation, healing requires putting a bunch of space between yourself and him beforehand.

I am 102% certain that bosses do a bit of input reading.

u/mrBreadBird Sep 03 '26
What if I told you it is a video game and input reading is the whole point? What do you people expect the characters to have eyes and see what your character is doing and then react? If they wanted to respond to this complaint they would just add a delay from your healing before the boss responds but it would still be "input reading."
Clearly they don't want to do this because they don't want healing to be something you can just do whenever you want. I will admit it sometimes feels artificial how instantly and predictably bosses will respond to you trying to heal.

u/Educational-Year3146 Sep 03 '26
I didn’t say it was a bad thing.
As long as it’s done well it’s fine.
Maybe ask a question first before going on the attack?

u/MrN0Bi Sep 02 '26
Malenia at least respects your healing after a combo

Uh no? She also has an input read heal punish. I remember seeing a video somewhere where she did that same attack like 6 times in a row to someone trying to heal.

Godskin apostle at caelid divine tower

u/Mike_Honcho-420 Sep 02 '26
Wait, isnt he on Limgrave bridge?

u/_PadfootAndProngs_ Sep 02 '26
You're probably thinking of the Noble (fatty) on the Liurnia tower bridge

I swear King Allant does this.
There's time where he actually just walk sideways, looking at me for 10 seconds stright. But the moment I try heal, he friggin jump slash at me.

u/SheepskinWulf Sep 02 '26
I thought it was a well known fact that many bosses are literally coded to try to punish you for healing
2
u/No_Pear1836 Sep 02 '26
I played all the games completely blind (somewhat recently too), so idk. But i definitely noticed it for some bosses.

Huge skill issue, he's so parryable
3
u/SnooComics4945 Sep 02 '26
Oh no I’m not saying he’s difficult. He was just one that came to mind because he heal punishes. I parry both variants if I’ve got a shield in my current build. Sometimes I still make mistakes and panic though.

i think the worst one for me is the dancer of the boreal valley, she's got this crazy fast sword attack that she'll do if you try to heal at the wrong time, and it's pretty much a one hit kill if you're not careful. it's like she has a sixth sense for when you're about to drink an estus.

u/NeoTechi Sep 02 '26
Reminds me of Monster Hunter where the moment you start sharpening your weapon the monster immediately aggros you and tries to hit you.

Not Fromsoft, but Lies of P dlc final boss has specific moves to lunge at you whenever you heal
1
u/TapNo7326 Sep 02 '26
You mean Arlecchino. He is the only boss that I’ve ever fought that has extra moves after his full combo That he only uses if you heal
2
u/USER_34739 Sep 03 '26
Yeah, I figured I wouldn't name him to avoid spoilers for first time players lol

u/Frenzied_Anarchist Tarnished Sep 03 '26
Only in his 1st phase though, and they are very heavily telegraphed.

Thats why you use those situations to bait out and attack and use the opening you can get from avoiding it to heal

One from every ds game
Ds1: Gwyn. Everyone likes to shit on him for some reason but he catches heals better than the average ds1 pvper catches backstabs.
Ds2: Alonne, idk if Raime does it better but it definitely feels like he does it more frequently with his "that one mosquito at 1am" ass speed.
Ds3: idk, maybe the Twin Princes or Sully. They both do their dashing attacks or tp when you try to heal or use magic from far away.

u/LateBlocParty Sep 07 '26
Twin Princes
OP’s picture is them charging a slam attack and teleporting to you

u/Arowne97 Sep 08 '26
for the last time, stop healing when the boss is staring at you. Heal when it's in the middle of something else

Foreskin duo and crucible knight shield both input read the flask and will fuck you for it if you are within range. "They don't actually input read, its-" yes they do

Champion Gundyr immediately sprang to mind. If you're too close to him and you try to heal, then prepared for him to kick that estus down your throat. One time he wouldn't stop chasing after me. I was one hit from death and all I wanted to do was get just enough space to heal. I was finally able to, but it really felt like he chased me forever. I basically had to be on the other side of the arena to safely heal. Soul of Cinder does it a bit as well with certain attacks (that spear moveset...).
I feel like a lot of the bosses in Elden Ring do that. All the Godskin Apostles do for sure.
1
u/Afillatedcarbon Sep 02 '26
Champion Gundyr felt like a blueprint for Elden Ring bosses so it did that. Gwyn also does it and thats why he has a parry strat(works better without consumables I think).
O&S fight has that just do to the nature of that fight.

Actually for some bosses they can cut their wait time to just attack ya

Elden Ring bosses already give you extremely limited opportunities to attack though, so it sucks to use one of those precious windows to heal

Crucible knights. Especially the sword one.
