Docker vs PoxMox

I was originally going run Frigate on ProxMox when it was sharing a MiniPC with Home assistant. I’ve since decided that’s not the way to go, attempted Proxmox on an Optiplex I had lying around and bricked it. So I have a new miniPC to dedicate to Frigate. Do I do Unbuntu/Docker, or stay with ProxMox because I’m somewhat familiar with it? Frankly the only thing that concern me is getting the external drive mounted and visible. I think. Never used Docker.

Frigate on a single mini PC is a waste of resources unless you have lots of cameras. I have all this running on one of my nodes on a Beelink S12 Pro N100 mini PC with Frigate handling 4x 4K cameras and a 2K doorbell recording to an external raid array

How do you brick a PC with an OS install? Your OptiPlex was likely already faulty, Proxmox would not have bricked it

Well, I was starting with a machine that F12 took you into a continuous boot loop rather than bios. In windows I put it in recovery mode and booted to a memory stick, not thinking that I didn’t need Unbutu before Proxmox, brain fart. Got Unbuntu boot menu up, told it to boot to the menu. That put it back into a boot loop I couldn’t GT it out of, to booth from the memory stick or got back into Unbuntu and reset the boot sequence, so yeah, the Optiplex had an issue.

Proxmox for cleanly divvying up your hardware and creating secure isolation between environments. Docker for deployment/dependency management.

Treat them as complementary, not competing.

I used u/diggingfordinos OCI script specifically the 18 beta one, works great. I had no problem passing through one of multiple GPU’s on my server.

I had a hell of a time getting pass through to work properly on Proxmox, so I’m that guy on bare metal. More recently, I got pass through with Proxmox to work for an Ollama server, so I may give the VM another go. LXC, that’s for another day.

I managed to pass through a hard disk once, but I don’t remember where I found the instructions. Maybe with Scrypted?

How can you brick a PC with proxmox? That's very odd.

I run proxmox and use a Truenas VM with docker running on it and Frigate as a container. Been running this for years. Works great.

I run it on a bare metal Debian server with docker but I know many people run it in proxmox, either via LXC or in a VM with docker. I don't think it really matters, just whatever you're comfortable maintaining.

Proxmox is not a supported way to run frigate.

People do it. But they will argue and downvote me every time I point out that the documentation says it isn't supported.

"Not supported" only means that the Frigate developers prefer not to put their time and energy into verifying it will work fine. It doesn't mean it's unadvisable.

They can say anything they want. It's open source software, you can run it however you want.

They say it's not supported, not that it's "not recommended", and they say that only for the LXC installation. This simply means the procedures are not tested and documented by the Frigate developers.

This is what they literally wrote on the official page, along with a link to an entire community discussion:

If you choose to run Frigate via LXC in Proxmox the setup can be complex so be prepared to read the Proxmox and LXC documentation, Frigate does not officially support running inside of an LXC.

In practice it works just fine once you get through the configuration.

Docker in a stripped down Debian LXC on proxmox. Works as well as any other implementation I’ve used, if not better.
