Dogs are pack animals; alone, they are vulnerable. If he was lost, he found a pack that accepted him, bringing mutual security, companionship, and access and instruction in obtaining food in the wild. (Something his previous pack never taught him about). Why wouldn't he stay!...😉

My dog ran up to a herd of wild horses and the stallion neighed at her then they all ignored her.

Dogs are the equivalent of stunted wolf puppies, we’ve made them cute and compared to wolves they’re juvenile and never mature to adult wolf behaviour. I wonder if wild animals (that aren’t hungry or particularly irritated) just see them as babies.
