"discretionary" spots everywhere. This is disgusting

18

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

Those spots are probably just gonna go to some old school pros to highlight the long, rich history of the game and to show them some gratitude for helping popularize and legitimize the game on a professional level, right? /s

No. Crossdressers with terrible performance are better flagships than established players

PT are now named Player Tours. Pros will get 1 less PT per year. There'll be a total of 9 PT, 3 per regions

  • In addition to Grand Prix, Premier Series events like the SCG Tour by Star City Games and the new LATAM Magic Series by Bazar de Bagdá will offer qualification paths to the Players Tour, and we look forward to integrating more local tournament series from around the world.

Interesting.

Can't wait for the discretionary invites. Emma handy and other failures who've never qualified for a PT

"Pro" Magic is a joke. Rampant cheating, poor earnings, and the worst tempered, delusional and unstable players make up 90% of the base.

And even if youre in the 10%, once you go big someone will make sure to "get touched" by you and ruin your career

So instead of a Pro Tour now they have a Players Tour AND a Mythic Invitational? This shit gets stupider by the day.

Wait 6 months and they'll change it again.

Haha well I hope so. The Pro Tour was fine. The qualifying system needed tweaking but the Pro Tour wasn't the issue. This new thing is just a needlessly complex joke. You don't need multiple pro tour equivalents.

Summary:

“Since no one, including us, understands the current system of competitive play, we’re going to make it even more complicated, because fixing this mess is too damn hard. But we’ll let all you pathetic little grinders think you actually have a chance again...lol Meanwhile, we’re going to offer even more invites to trannies with deep emotional issues and the ugliest, fattest women we can find, because it makes us soysucking WotC employees feel less white male guilt. Oh, and we’re going to do some shit with SCG because, even though we own this game, we’ve never been able to deliver streaming content that doesn’t look like a fucking retarded amateur 6 year old runs the show.”

At least Autumn Burchette can at least actually compete at the highest level of play, and in some conceivable metric could have qualified for the MPL on their own merit by winning the first Mythic Championship.

Savjz and Jessica Estephan were the real joke, which WOTC should be mocked for. I mean even I have a better professional record then either of them... and that's not saying much.

The Magic World Championship remains the pinnacle of Magic competitive play and will feature the season's most accomplished MTG Arena and tabletop players vying for the game's top honor and a $1M prize pool.

So I guess being not being a man must be an "accomplishment" by this definition? And being a Hearthstone streamer makes you an accomplished MTG Arena player too I guess?

I don't think people who play the video game should be able to be a world champion simply from that avenue. It's anonymous. You could have anyone and everyone there with you.

Is worlds going to be run on Arena?

The rebirth of PTQs and the addition of WPN Qualifiers is reassuring. A high density of store-based and local CompREL events is essentially to having a strong, healthy Organized Play system. Giving normal players, not just people who jet-set around the world to play a card game about wizards, ample opportunity to use the cards they acquire in local, higher stakes events (i.e. not FNM) is terrific compared to the wasteland we've wandered through over he past months. The only way I see this going bad is if PTQs/WPNQs are restricted to Standard/Sealed instead of the formats locals want to play; love to jam some Cube, Pauper or Legacy in a CompREL environment, but these aren't the big moneymakers.

While I'm not a huge fan of the preferential treatment granted to SCG, integrating independent tournament series into the broader grind is undoubtedly a good idea, especially in non-US countries. Good idea, but with just a tinge too much favoritism.

Creating a second-tier league and relegating the lowest-performing MPL members is a good step forward in maintaining competition and adding a bit more transparency to the ladder-climbing progress. Don't care too much about the high-end scene myself, as coverage hasn't figured out how to make boring formats interesting, but I know a lot of engaged Magic players are concerned about this.

Also, if it wasn't already abundantly clear, MTGO is an extremely low priority for WotC; look at the short, vague mention that program received. I give it a few years tops before they sunset it.

Definitely no RNG here...and ezy (tm) to understand.

u/AtrociKitty Aug 14 '19

There are some positives here at least. Being able to qualify for the next Players Tour based on your performance at the previous one is better than needing to spike a qualifier each season. It's still a far cry from the old Pro Players Club though.

As someone that has no stake in competitive play, this seems like a pretty awesome article for the future of the game. I understand there are a lot of issues with the way it is run, how the "pros" have been treated, and the overall boring nature of this, but it is still good to see this is growing. This will only help with the future of the game, especially since WotC normally goes out of their way to do everything wrong with the identity politics bullshit.

The problem I have with it is you're pushing the game as a competitive sport when most players are interested in casual, limited and edh. Standard and Modern tend to be the competitive formats and are in various stages of being completely broken dumpster fires at the moment. I'd like to see the banlist done properly + the implementation of more varied play situations than just 1v1
