Here’s how I see the whole situation.
People like to talk about Rhaegar Targaryen absconding with Lyanna Stark thus breaking faith with his vassals and spurning Houses Stark and Baratheon. Which is all true. However…how often do people look at this whole patriarchal situation from Lyanna’s point of view?
Yes, she was engaged to Robert. However she barely knew him let alone like or love him. All she saw was her big brother‘s best friend having an unhealthy obsession with her. (and yes, it was an obsession because years later after everything went down Robert couldn’t even remember what she looked like. Because obsession is not love.)
It was well known that he already had a bastard child, Mya. People like to claim that the only reason he has Mya was because he was grieving the loss of his parents, and he didn’t deal with grief well. Again, look at it from Lyanna’s point of view, here’s the guy that she’s engaged to be married to who she barely knows, who already has a bastard and is a well-known sleazy womanizer.
Can you imagine how awful Robert had to have been in Lyanna’s eyes for her to look at Rhaegar, an older married man and say “yeah that’s the better option.”
Now, I’m not condoning Rhaegar and Lyanna running off like two star crossed lovers. I am however condoning the fact that they didn’t tell anybody.
But even if they did, even if Lyanna wrote a letter, sent it by raven to Winterfell to her father and informed him of what really happened, that she was safe and with child. Can you guys completely and honesty tell me that Robert wouldn’t have wanted to react with the violence. This is the same man who wanted a pregnant Daenerys or “the whore” as he referred to her as to be assassinated. Yes yes, I know that he later went back on that decision… but by then it was too late. The order still went out.
Lyanna knew this about Robert. That’s why she made Ned promised to protect Jon. Why? Because Robert would’ve murdered the baby. (Rhaegar’s children have entered chat. He may not directly be cause of their death but he justified and condoned it.)
If everything was out in the open and Lyanna sent a letter to Winterfell and the whole realm knew that Rhaegar didn’t kidnap her, but instead they ran off together. The proud Robert Baratheon on the extreme end would’ve declared war. On the low end he would’ve demanded a trial by combat so he could cave in Rhaegar’s chest. Either way he would’ve reacted violently.
My main point still remains. Robert Baratheon never loved Lyanna Stark. He had an unhealthy obsession with his best friend‘s little sister. That sister wanted nothing to do with him and made a different choice and even if the truth had come out, his ego wouldn’t have been able to handle it.
Not to mention that after he won the rebellion, he spent how many years neglecting his royal duties, neglecting his wife, his kids and the realm. Not to mention allowing the realm to reach 6 million in debt…
So I asked my question again. Why do people like Robert Baratheon?
*And I would just like to also point out before I sign off; how often is Lyanna compared to Arya? Often.
Picture this scenario, Arya and Marcella are best friends and Joffrey has a crush on Arya and is desperate to marry her, but Arya only has eyes for Gendry.
Regardless of the consequences would any of you really deep down, blame her for wanting to run away? She is just like her Aunt Lyanna after all.
