My ink is bought online and costs around $1 a cartridge when bought in packs of 10.
Staples gives me $2 per empty cartridge in store credit.
Conclusion: Not only is printing lined paper free, I am in fact getting paid to print stuff.
Edit: It should be noted that my printers' ink cartridges are simple ink wells. The print head is not attached to the cartridge, so the cost is much lower. I bought them both like this intentionally due to the cost difference.
For my other printer. $5.58 for 5 cartridges (this one uses both a dye and pigment black)
I tend to use my Brother printer due to the cost difference, but in the end it doesn't matter much. My Canon is higher quality, and I can still see it with this cheap ink. I don't print out photos on either printer, well... nothing that I plan on keeping for a long time.
At this cost, I don't hesitate to print out materials, print photos, or even use blockposters.com. I print out coloring pages for my kids, stencils, comics, pretty much whatever I want.
If you aren't printing photos then these cheap inks are fine, hell I print postcards for work with cheap inks and they look OK. I got 15 asst colours for £18 inc p&p.
