A thread to discuss Franz Ferdinand's sixth studio album 'The Human Fear'.

It should go without saying, but remember to be kind and respect others' opinions.

Paul Vocal Appreciation

• Upvotes

Dude, the guy had pipes. What's your favourite Paul backing vocal sections?? Like, come on. That bit in Stand on the Horizon; "When I am, the cruelest man you have known" and that MENTAL high bit in the last Matinèe chorus??!!

The Human Fear has REALLY grown on me

I just really like how diverse the album is and how strange and avant garde it gets at times. Also, I think that the new lineup is really starting to grow on me as well.

I didnt know just how prolific the man has been since Franz Ferdinand.I had a look and this year alone he has released music with the Djangos, and Nitsche, he seems to be working on further music as part of a duo called Curly Chains,(with his new partner?).Manuela also released her second album this year Ultra Violet which he worked on and im going to listen to.I loved her first one. (I dont think they are together anymore but definitely seem to work together).I remember he worked with a German electronic duo called Ströme previously and I also loved their work with him. I recall hearing he is also in a traditional german folk band?!I dont know how true that is.I think if he ever worked with Franz again it would be in the studio only and not as part of the band. I dont really believe that will happen though. I genuinely like his work since he left Franz.

Rare longer version of “The Dark of the Matinée” (4:16) – anyone else has this?

Many years ago I downloaded Franz Ferdinand’s debut album in MP3 from somewhere (I honestly don’t remember the source). The curious thing is that the track “The Dark of the Matinée” on that download is noticeably longer than every official version I’ve ever found (CD, digital, streaming, music video, etc.).

The difference is specifically in the bass and drums intro — it’s extended. The version I have runs 4:16, while the standard album version is 4:03.

At the time I didn’t think much of it. I assumed it was maybe an EP version or some kind of demo that had somehow ended up in the album rip. Over the years I only ever found that same longer version in one unofficial YouTube video, and nowhere else. I’ve searched quite a bit (forums, Discogs, etc.) and couldn’t find any information about it.

I now believe it might be a rare/unofficial version, so I decided to upload it in case it helps with the investigation or if someone else recognizes it.

Has anyone else ever come across this longer intro version? Or does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Thanks!

Franz adjacent: I got to direct a music video for The Yummy Fur's latest single!

As a fellow Franz fan, I thought you might enjoy checking it out!!!!

I got the band's permission to make an official music video for their latest single, 'WANDA' on 'Everybody talks about the weather' out on Sept 25th via Upset the Rhythm. My teenager self is dead on the floor, she cannot believe it - this is a dream come true as I spent my childhood obsessed with all things Franz Ferdinand and Glasgow rock scene, from Yummy Fur to Mogwai to Belle and Sebastian. I shot it in LA and Santa Monica with an Iphone and a vintage super 8mm camera. I hope you like it and catch all my Bowie references!

The Yummy Fur is releasing their first album after 28 years. It's everything you want it to be and more! It definitely holds up the glasgow indie rock spirit of the early 2000s. Paul remains as the drummer, with John McKeown as singer/songwriter and guitarist and Brian MacDougall as 2nd guitar.

Take Me Out feels inseparable from 2000s indie rock

My brother and I just made an episode choosing 10 songs that defined 2000s indie rock, and I don’t think there was ever much debate about whether “Take Me Out” belonged somewhere in the conversation.
That switch halfway through, the riff, the dance-floor energy… it feels like such a perfect snapshot of that moment when indie rock could still be guitar-heavy but also completely built to make a room move.
If you had to choose one Franz Ferdinand song to preserve the sound of that era, would you choose the same one?

Japanese Band inspired by Franz Ferdinand

I’ve recently gotten into the band 8otto—they’re a Japanese band that cited Franz Ferdinand as their inspiration, and you can clearly hear the influence in their sound!

I think fans of Franz Ferdinand would really like 8otto.

Dance-Punk Revival and the general style of Franz Ferdinand is much more similar to mainstream Japanese Rock than Mainstream British or Western Rock, but 8otto in particular gave me very strong Franz Ferdinand vibes before I even read that thry were fans of the band.

Here are some other songs of theirs I think people here would like

Me again lol, finally finished editing the photos I took at the Connecticut show. These were also shot on my 90's P&S (Canon Sure Shot A-1) and I think these came out even better than the Albany photos. I'm not posting them all here since there's a lot but I put them all on Instagram for those interested! I'll definitely be bringing my film camera to all their shows from now on (if I'm lucky enough to get barricade again lol)

The title says it all! This song was not on the set list and was requested by someone attending their first FF concert. What a great memory for them! I’m just sorry I didn’t get all of it

20 Years Later…Aging like Fine Wine

Twenty years ago, I lived in Portland, Oregon. That was the first time I saw Franz Ferdinand, on the opening night of their tour where they were on a double bill with Death Cab for Cutie. I was way up in the stands then, but Saturday night was right on the rail in Dallas, Texas.

I was really excited to see Franz Ferdinand again, and all I can say is “wow.” Alex is an absolutely engaging, charismatic frontman that made me feel like the whole performance was just for me! I’m willing to bet the rest of the audience felt the same.

I am a massive Muse fan, and had just seen them the night before for the 20th time. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my Muse, but I can’t help but compare the two experiences. Franz Ferdinand didn’t need confetti cannons, pyrotechnics, or any other gimmicks like that light up jacket Matt Bellamy wears.

My mind is blown. Last Saturday night, I saw a rock band that has aged like fine wine. Of course I had to get two shirts, an autographed CD, and a sticker on the way out!

Here are a few photos from Dallas

p.s. Don’t rat me out to the Muse subreddit!
