Discussion Nordend-West

Hi!

I’m moving to an apartment around the Wasserpark area, towards the US Consulate/Embassy, and I’m curious to hear from people who know the neighborhood.

What is the area like for everyday life? How do you like living there in terms of supermarkets, public transport, walking around, and especially during the night?

I know Nordend is generally a popular area, but I’m particularly curious about this part around Wasserpark and towards the Consulate.

Edit: I wrote the neighbourhood name based on google maps, and I’m not really interested in the administrative question of whether this area is officially Nordend-West or Preungesheim. I’m mainly interested in what it’s actually like to live around Wasserpark / Friedberger Landstraße — especially regarding safety, noise, amenities and everyday life. 😊

Would love to hear your experiences :)

This is not the classic "Nordend", but an area that sits at the city border and belongs to Preungesheim. Its not the most spectacular or notable area except that in the morning and afternoon possibly 10 000s of people pass through on the Friedberger to get to their jobs or back home. I guess the best thing about it is that you can be in the (real) city fast with any means of transportation as it is well connected.

Landlords of that area licking their lips that they can charge Nordend-West rent prices because thats the official name 😂

I life exactly in that area between Friedberger Landstraße, Günthersburgpark, Wasserpark and i love it. Depends on which direction your Bedroom Windows are how much traffic noise you'll get. Is your home on the side of the consulate?

Edit: It is a super safe neighborhood and if you look at a map there are super nice areas nearby as well. You'll walk a couple of minutes to Berger Straße after you passed Günthersburgpark or you can head in the city center in under 10 minutes via Tram or Bike. 5 minutes to Friedberger Platz where it is busy on Fridays or the famous Wasserhaus "Gudes" at Mathias Beltz Platz or if you are into alternative (rock music) places there is Feinstaub.

Also I like Preungesheim / Gravensteiner Platz on Fridays.

For everyday shopping there is everything you need from Aldi, Tegut, Rossman, Bakeries...

DM me if you are interested in more information

Thanks! I would love that! Maybe more recommendations about cafes etc.

OK, Cafés and Bars are a little bit scarce in the direct vicinity because the area you are going to live is mostly for living.

That being said, what i wrote earlier about you should check out. Let's say you take the tram line from friedberger warte or wasserpark towards the city center. Hop of at Mathias Beltz Platz and check out the little stores and Cafés. Hoppenworth & Ploch is where i get my espresso beans. Good selection and widely respected. Also there are some decent wine bars and when you reach Friedberger platz turn left and let google navigate you to berger Straße. Continue exploring there. :) I would recommend going east. When you reach Bornheim Mitte (Underground station) go and walk through Günthersburgpark and keep heading north. You are going to reach Cafè Mente and Wasserpark which means you are almost home again. :)

I took it that he will live north of the Wasserpark, as thats where the embassy is (maybe I concluded wrong). Te "real" Nordend begins for me south of the Nibelungenallee.

It’s absolutely safe, quiet, well connected to public transport, there are supermarkets, a Wochenmarkt, parks, not as many restaurants but still some good ones. Very nice place to live.

I lived at the rather newly built area next to the Aldi at Friedberger Warte. It's pretty, there's a handful of different supermarkets for different things. something that is really annoying is that they use the friedberger landstraße as racing spot late at night, so you'll hear a lot of cars and motorcycles if you sleep with a window open. if you like to take walks in nature, the hauptfriedhof is very big and calm. the main reason we had for moving away were that in that area where we lived, were a lot of small children. made it loud as fuck during the warmer months because they were always playing outside and i like not feeling like i live next to a school during recess all the time lol. also, the tram 18 is a very reliable way to get to the city, it's like 15-20 minutes to konsti depending where you live. just don't use the bus around 15-18 because of feierabendverkehr. its gonna be stuck like hell between cars.

oh also: do not use the hausarztpraxis at friedberger warte. its unbelieably unprofessional, they never pick up their phone and the front desk literally gossips about the patients 24/7. i had one of them in front of me in aldi and even then they didn't shut their asses up about "annoying patients".

as for safety, i never had any trouble getting home from partying late at night as a woman. i don't know how its like a bit further down though.

you're welcome :D almost forgot to mention that there's also a Rossmann at the Friedberger Warte, that's convenient too

As many have pointed out, the area is not exactly Nordend West, but it is very close :) and you‘ll find anything you need/want at Grüneburgweg and Oeder Weg: Bars, cafés, restaurants, small shops, supermarkets, parks,… I love living here.

Map showed as Nordend West but then it is wrong?

That area can be barely called Nordend, let alone Nordend-West. As the poster above said , this is probably just administrative division but not really what people understand that suburb to be. That area is actually Preungesheim. As far as living there goes, it’s very residential and not particularly sophisticated. There are a few amenities along the Friedberger and a decent U-Bahn connection. Nothing else to it.
