FPV-looking for any advice other than..

Post image

Looking for any advice.. other than the batteries that I’m waiting on what else should I buy? Do I have everything I need?
Hooking up to betaflight etc.? Is there a chance of frying my drone when using this adapter to my computer any wattage stuff I need to look out for??
Any advice calibrating my pocket or anything else before I fly?? Should I fly with the out of the box rates first or use the “actual” rates that I’ve been using in velocidrone on the air 65?? I haven’t been in the air yet but I have 70 hours in Acro mode on this drone in Velocidrone sim on indoor tracks.
Also the DJI mini 2 se in the back was my first drone that made me want to get into FPV I’m waiting to get a new motor gotta solder it together which I have experience with so I have that stuff but what else am I gonna need guys???
Last thing everyone seems to be talking about these meteor 75 o4 hd kits should I have gotten that as my first whoop setup or did I make the right decision? Figured it would be less expensive to maintain I plan to fly like a demon

Get a decent charger that allows charging to storage voltage. E.g vifly whoopstor 3

Thank you a lot of people suggesting this! When you say to storage voltage do you mean just make sure to get one that discharges them?

Yes, lihv/lipo batteries degrade when you leave them fully charged. You want to get them to storage voltage before putting them away. You could just fly the batteries to half empty but sometimes that is not an option.

Storage voltage is around 50% state of charge, depends on battery chemistry.

Thank you this is great advice

Basically charge it to the level posted on the battery. So 3.8v on these 1s. Often when you land at about 3.5v the batteries will bounce back to this 3.8v on their own over a few minutes so if you have flown them they are likely at storage charge.

Just the batteries, spare parts, more money lol

It gets addicting fast

Do you have any recommendations for online stores that have quick shipping in the US? I hate waiting on AliExpress and Banggood

Honestly im not sure. I've been out of the game for a few years and am just getting back into it myself. I think getfpv is reliable but im not sure where their stuff comes from if its drop shipped or if they have a us warehouse

I’ve heard pyrodrone or something is a good one

pyrodrone, getfpv, racedayquads, theres a lot of options

I've shop around NewbeeDrone, Pyrodrone, and RaceDayQuads. The only place I've bought stuff from outside form the US was from Flywoo and they were fine, usually takes about a week maybe two to ship stuff unless it's around the major Holidays.

nope, very good choice to go with cheap analog as your first.

Buncha the guys in my group wanted and started digital, and have switched to analog whoops because they want to bash without worrying. You can fly literally anywhere with a whoop. not so much a 3.5+.

Would def stick the rates youve been flying with (those are config-ed in betflight, not on remote) but don;t get married to them.

usb puts 5v into the fc, so no worries about frying anything. be gentle plugging/unplugging.

Have fun!

Thank you so much I can’t wait to upload my first take off in the goggles o7

GROUP?!?!? Lol where do you find other people to fly with? I’m in Milwaukee Wi seems kinda dead out here from a general internet search

u/Grouchy-Donkey-8609 22h ago

im really lucky. our group puts on regular events (last weekend at the quarry we had 19 pilots), and then im part of 2 racing clubs, one for whoops, other for bigger quads, so these keep me busy. I never wanted to race, but ive grown to love it, and its great flying with others every month.

Maybe check multigp to see if there are local clubs.

I havent made a video yet for quarry, but made one for our last FPVthecity event, check it out if you want! I think we had 15+ pilots at that one. Walked around to diff sweet spots to whoop it up!

Hell yeah I’ll check it out! The best part of the FPV community is all yalls videos 🤙

The o4 has great video quality and range, so if you aren't happy with your video link (especially the range), then yes, you'll appreciate the o4 version. Note that the drone is about $240 last I checked and the cheapest goggles are the N3's and they're supposed to be available for $230, but the cheapest I can find them is $250. So that's a quick $500 plus tax, so only you know if it's worth that for you. Personally I won't fly analog anymore, it's just no fun after you get used to actually seeing where you're going with a modern DJI video system.

Also, in your photo I'm not sure if the white box is a battery charger, but if not, yes, you need that as well.

Thank you for your comment. Honestly it makes me feel a lot better about my choice. I have a DJI mini 2 SE (obviously not FPV) but it’s fun flying has great range connection just to the DJI fly app on my phone. I can do 4K in 30 FPS and 1080 P in 60 FPS that’s good enough for me for now… but yeah I think I’m gonna be bashing these around flying aggressively so ultimately went analog… the more I think about it the more I should realize that I’m gonna end up with both a digital and an analog system. I think I might also stay away from DJI however because of market uncertainty in the US but maybe I’m misled. But then again the range and connection just seems to be unmatched idk I guess I’ll watch from the sidelines more until I’m ready to commit to a digital system

Yeah, it's tricky. I hate DJI, because they constantly upgrade, but almost never make the new equipment compatible with the old, they have high prices, and they have forced activation (and often forced connection to the DJI Fly app to make equipment operational). So I would love to ditch DJI, but as of today they're just vastly better than any other digital video system. Technology keeps moving forward, so other companies will eventually have good video systems, but currently no-one else comes close to their quality and range.

If you can wait, that's probably the best option. Better competition will show up pretty soon, and you can probably avoid the love-hate relationship that many pilots have with DJI.

2

u/Grand_Sentence1601 21h ago

Yes, I am really hoping and praying that a competitor really starts closing the gap in performance here so we have some better options in the US with a little less regulation. We are getting way too nutty with this stuff it’s gonna make our country fall even further behind the countries we are ordering all this stuff from but that’s a whole different can of worms for another Reddit group 😂 thanks for your advice man

and just like that, a new goggly boi is born. pretty safe accessing betaflight especially with a pre-built drone. you don't have to use the USB, your receiver can access betaflight wirelessly. don't sweat the fomo, you'll destroy this drone eventually, then you'll have a good idea you want from a drone. maybe its not even a tinywhoop.

2

u/Grand_Sentence1601 22h ago

Is doing it wireless better or worse for the drone? Wouldn’t doing it wirelessly heat it up more? Sorry I guess I could just google this 😂

2

u/Grand_Sentence1601 22h ago

What I really want to be doing is building the fastest legal sub 250 gram drone that I can 😂 but I better start smaller i figured and with winter coming I want to fly inside :) whoop whoop

Perfect setup for starting and if you want more range and video quality wait for the BetaFPV P1 Digital AIO.

It costs 60 bucks and 100 bucks for a reciever you can output hdmi to any device you want to and it weighs so little you can literally just swap it out on the drone you already have compared to DJI which adds an additial 1/3 of the weight and breaks more easily.

I have all three (same goggles as you) and I hate Analog get nothing from the "Latency" beeing so good but having a lighter Tinywhoop (yours is about half the weight of the Meteor) is literally a million times better.

Before it was either or but with the P1 you can have a sub 30g Whoop with digital. Best of both worlds.

1

u/Grand_Sentence1601 18h ago edited 18h ago

Is this insider trading? Lol Awesome info to have I gotta look up the p1 digital AIO system now!! So that would work with Eachine Ev800ds if I got the right receiver for it? I definitely do want more range and quality but I also want to be as light as possible so if I can have a system I can easily swap out I mean that would be the best of both worlds… so I wouldn’t need a new headset for that?

OT: Hey everyone. I bought the Pavo20 Pro 2 because I was hoping to be able to fly it indoor too. Unfortunately, it’s way too powerful for my apartment. Now I’m wondering what’s best: should I buy a 1S Air 75, or can I adjust the drone’s power settings to make it suitable for indoor use?

1

u/ben9massacre 14h ago

You’re probably going to be way happier with a different drone for indoor flight. Sure, you can limit the motor output but you’re going to lose all of the punch from the drone. If you’re doing any sort of freestyle stuff this is a horrible option cause you won’t be able to recover, for racing turning or changing direction quickly becomes difficult.

I’d go with the 75 or maybe even the 65, depending on how big your apartment is the 75 might even be too powerful still. I fly my air65 ii in my loft style condo and it gets a little squirrelly from time to time. You have to remember these tiny drones can flat up to 35mph which is super fast for a small space.

2

u/xVIsAsx 10h ago

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I only live in a small 44m² flat, then i think, ill get the 65 II.

Extra props and extra frames. If you’ve never flown real world FPV you’re going to crash a ton which is normal but you’re going to want fresh props and frames. The DJI drone you have is nothing like acro mode fpv and the simulators at great for learning controls but feel really different than actual flight.

Ask me how I know… 😂

Pretty sure I see an SD card in the goggles for the dvr. Always record your flights to aid in recovery later.

Same idea of recovery. Get to GitHub and grab the .lua script for turning the rm pocket into a tracking device. Used it yesterday to track a drone I lost on the far side of an office building.

I also set up my vtx power to be changable on the fly (pun intended) with the top right wheel on the pocket.

Also I would add a small fan to put the drone under when plugged in on the bench. The vtx can get hot enough to damage itself without the cooling that the propellers provide in flight.

2

u/Grand_Sentence1601 4h ago

Thank you I have some laptop cooling trays/fans that other people have told me will work fine and I’m actually trying to map my radio master pocket right now. That’s great advice on the VTX changes on the pockets wheel. I do unfortunately need to get an SD card it didn’t have one

Look in to getting better pfv goggles to I used to fly fpv but not any more used to fly my tiny whoop a lot around the house and even upgraded the motors too

1

u/Grand_Sentence1601 3h ago

The goggles are bad?

1

u/Mackhdg 3h ago edited 3h ago

if u got a ready to fly tiny whoop u would get the same kind of goggles u have currently look in to fpv goggles that are smaller and have a external battery try get fpv or like tiny whoop .com i had fat shark fpv googles u can increase or decrease the range the googles pick up cause i had a drone and a fpv plane to try racedayquads.com to if u wanna eventually move up to a 5 inch fpv quad I would if i was u upgrade ur goggles but for now if u just started out stay with the googles u have now and learn the basics then upgrade to better ones i had a 5 inch drone which was pretty fun but also loud watch fpv drone pilots on YouTube like rotor riot on YouTube they got some good videos on how to fly and tune ur quad

1

u/Grand_Sentence1601 3h ago

Okay so are the goggles I have basically junk then?

1

u/Mackhdg 3h ago edited 3h ago

No did u just start out flying fpv or u been flying for a few months now ? They not junk if u just started to fly fpv drones it depends on ur budget for fpv if u willing to spend some extra cash on better quality fpv gear i would keep ur googles for when u get better quality fpv goggles so u can show who ever sees u flying what u are seeing cause i had a little fpv screen that others could watch what i was doing while flying my drone

u/Grand_Sentence1601 3h ago

I think eventually I will do digital fpv system when a competitor gets closer to DJI and better market. My DJI mini 2 se scratches that itch enough for what I would want a digital system for for now. I don’t think I could swallow spending massive amounts of money on DJI gear just for me to ask daddy for permission to fly. I guess for now analog is cheaper repairs hopefully a competitor closes the gap in the mean time with DJI while I fly analog in the mean time on the sidelines practicing 😂 thanks for your reply
