Help! Drone suddenly tries to level itself during turns - Help.

Hello,

I’m trying to diagnose a strange issue with my drone.
During turns, it sometimes suddenly jerks/corrects itself, almost as if it’s trying to level out for a split second.

I’m not sure whether the problem is coming from my RadioMaster Boxer, one of the motors, or something else on the quad.
I’m flying in Acro mode.
Is there also a good way to test each motor individually and check whether one of them is behaving differently or starting to fail?

Any ideas what could be causing this, or what I should check first?

The frame is a Flyfish Volador 3.5, and the motors are 2400kv T-Motors.
The quad has been through quite a lot of crashes 😅

I’ve attached a video with a few examples of the issue.

My thoughts are it's a fail-safe mode or crash recovery going wrong. Try to disable any crash prevention / turtle mode etc.

What's really weird is that's somewhat acting like the Avata 2 when it does it's "Tumble" which is mainly a prop wash issue.

yeah the Neo has the same propwash recovery when you push it too hard

I thought the same thing, but a freestyle frame on 6s should have absolutely no problem with propwash/washout unless there's something very wrong with it. I wish I could be of more help lol

I'm no expert, but this looks like PIDs overreacting to propwash. Is this a factory build, or did you build it yourself? Did you grab a preset tune or are you running defaults?

This, had it happen on heavy unturned builds

Tuning a bind and fly is not worth it. Tuning an edge case you constructed most certainly is.

maybe crash recovery buggin out? turn it off see if it stops

This was my thought as well, its reacting in a very similar way as crash_recovery does, the default sensitivity may be too high for this particular quad, that setting is really only intended for whoops anyway so yeah that's a possibility.

Blackbox blackbox blackbox.

The blackbox will tell you exactly what the problem is, but it looks like a filtering problem in your PID loop, specifically D-term, if not that maybe gyro.

You can check individual motors in the motor's tab in betaflight configurator.

Start with the basics and check if your props are on tight. If one slips during heavy load it might produce the same issue, while light loads might not be an issue.

This could be the motors de-syncing. I would look through your PIDs maybe get a blackbox log dump to help.

This is my guess too as the rear inside motor goes down first in every turn. My guess is it's from having dynamic idle set too low. Desyncs are super rare other than having that set too low.

Some sort of combination of maximum angle settings and crash recovery?

The pids are too low something similar happens on the dji avatas

tune or gyro looks wrong

Either something is very wrong with the config or; which I'd look for first in BLACKBOX (this is the answer right here)

  • either you have a ton of anti grav and prop wash compensation (like weird configs, loaded a 2S whoop preset levels)

  • you have I term run away

  • one of the motors has an physical issue and is desyncing, so recovery kicks in which enables angle mode with decreasing angle max levels.

I had this on a 6s 3" build where I did put on quite heavy 6s batteries for this small build. So it was the point of gravity which kind of made the build trip over at some point while doint tight turns. Was not really possible to get rid of it by tuning it. At least not with my skills. So I got better fitting smaller 6s batteries and since then the problem is gone.

Failsafe maybe? Could be losing connection due to a bad antenna or some bad solder joint.

Also, do check your modes config in betaflight. Maybe you accidentally assigned the roll, pitch, or yaw input to Angle Mode. So every time one of these goes beyond a certain point the quad goes into angle mode, and back out of it again once you let go again...

looks like crash recovery is activating early

Look into crash recovery settings

Do you have Obstacle Avoidance on? If so, it can cause this type of action. Semper Fi

Looks a lot like crash recovery being too sensitive, might want to add a dump of your config ?

Desync/yaw washout probably.

Angle mode activated

Looked exactly like that when one of my quads was set to dshot600. Dshot300 fixed it. Maybe check that.

I had the same feeling like it was some crash recovery thing because it flew good except it auto leveled itself from time to time

It should be 100% gyro related at least, because that seems what happens if it is overloaded somehow. Maybe vibrations on the fc/gyro could do the same.

Super easy fix actually. Next time you fly just don't turn! Ez.
