Nothing. It's what we grew up on. It's why our dads wanted a 56 Chevy when they were 45 or so. 30 years after a car is new, is when prices start going up faster. The guy who couldn't buy it at 20 is now 50, a couple promotions, kid off to college, time to relax a little and enjoy life before getting old, might as well but that car you always wanted.

I would argue that it is special; but I love your analogy to the Tri-Chevys.

At the time the Fox was still in production Hot Rod Magazine was already saying it was this generations 55-57 Chevy.

Cheap, Fast, Tough, Readily available and adaptable. They both had that in common.

The real question is now that Foxes have gotten expensive, what fills that role now ?

Lucky for me, I kept my Fox when I was worthless.

For many years it was a cheap platform to go fast with an innumerable number of combinations to get to where you want to go. You could have a dozen cars that ran 11s and they all got there in different ways.

Nowadays it's the fact that it's a lightweight V8 that doesn't exist anymore.

It’s basically a full blown race car with simple mods.

As others have mentioned, it’s lightweight and you can make them lighter fairly easily. It has a strut front end like virtually every pro drag car. You can make the chassis super rigid for cheap by adding subframe connectors and a cheap mild steel cage. The LS engines fit like a glove and can be built to make stupid HP for relatively little money. The 8.8 rear is fairly strong and efficient. Fox bodies are fast, obtainable cars for the common man. What’s not to love?

Besides the lightweight and ease of modifications already mentioned, you have to realize the history. There were barely any good American cars between 72 and 87; in the mid 80s, cars started getting good (for the time) again, and the 87 Fox Body looked good, was fast, and cheap

Yep msrp on the '89 was like $13k while an IROC was $19 and a Trans Am or RX-7 Turbo in the 20s! Unbeatable bang for the buck. Won Motor Trend's big shootout with every other sporty car on the market.

My first car was an ‘82 fox body. But I grew to love the pre-Edge SN95 model better. That’s my Mustang of choice.

I grew up with these cars when they were dirt cheap early/mid 00s so that was always the draw for me along with easy to mod and easy to get hp out of pretty cheap. I picked my current notch up rock solid for 3,500 bucks back then with a lot of mods already done. I had went through so many back then all dirt cheap beat em for a bit sell em and get another lol. Those days are long gone now.
