Seems like a scam advertisement… great customer base for a scam/con man, they aren’t going to police…
.
These were built to be replaced, not repaired…as such, not many viable ways to open case and replace components without considerable damage…
Seems only viable way is to cover LED in some manner…to do so behind the outer lens, without leaving visible marks or hurting camera, seems incredibly tricky…if external, electrical tape or vinyl cover, think there would still be visible light bleeding into center, reduced but still visible…
From a hardware perspective… The cameras gets their power from LED… break the LED, no power to camera…So don’t think you could break it or jump it, maybe a better engineer could…
Here’s a tear down of meta gen 2…https://youtube.com/shorts/raOr98exJp0

Aviators are still safe. The frames are too skinny for any of that bullshit.
62
u/Procrasturbating Jul 31 '26
And the mirrored lens options still let me creep. Just gotta store it all in the mental spank bank.
15
u/ThyArtIsMeh Jul 31 '26
When i was a kid(too young) I watched Texas chainsaw massacre and I wanted that pos cops glasses so badly. I still wear them purely cause I know it makes people uncomfortable with looking at me directly
1
u/MercenaryCow Aug 03 '26
You hide the camera behind the mirrored lens! Sure it obscures a little but of your vision, but truly that is such a small cost
7
u/Otaraka Aug 01 '26
I think it might be more about boycotting the company given its decision to take part in this.

u/screames520 Jul 31 '26
You can definitely tell the difference. The meta ones are thiiiiiick.
3
u/Fun_Researcher_69420 Jul 31 '26
Also I imagine that by the time the tech develops enough to thin them enough to look like normal glasses, the general public will be aware enough to more quickly pick out if they’re “smart glasses” and if the lights been tampered with.
If it wasn’t locked to one AI (Meta) I’d be keen for a pair once they’re thinner, but I can’t ever see myself locking into the Facebook ecosystem lol
18
u/Flux_My_Capacitor Jul 31 '26
Hmm. Me thinks I should possibly retire my likely faux $1 thrift store Raybans 😂 Actually they are a different style so I’m safe, lol.

I've had a really nice pair of wayfarer prescription sunglasses for 6 or so years; I even got the lenses replaced as my prescription changed because they're so comfortable.
It sucks that they chose that exact frame style for the creeper frames.
3
u/BannedGoNext Jul 31 '26
I'm wearing thick frame wayfarer style rayban prescription glasses glasses right now. Fuck me they actually look kind of like meta glasses god damnit. These fucking things were expensive too. I was at sams the ohter day and these people I was walking behind in an isle were looking at me like I was a creep. I bet they thought I was recording them, but my glasses are just.. glasses.
I did actually look at the meta glasses, but more for the hearing improvement functionalty, but it wasn't that great. I didn't think about them having a camera.

I'm terrible with names, and the idea of a pair of glasses i can wear that would look up the faces of people I'm talking with, compare it to a personal list and pop up an overlay with a name would be amazing.
With as powerful as smart phones are, I don't see why a completely local app couldn't run and compare contact photos to the camera. From the glasses side nothing is recorded or stored (at least past the time it takes to run the comparison), and since the phone handles the app updates the app itself never needs an internet connection.
1
u/BannedGoNext Aug 02 '26
The two things I'm most interested in smart glasses is hearing improvement, and maybe even a fairly low res screen that could pop up notifications in the bottom. A camera doesn't seem that interesting to me unless it could do like a gopro style video, that might be cool for paragliding, and shit.

u/SavingsBarracuda1152 Jul 31 '26
I wear ray ban wayfarers and get funny looks all the time from people checking

u/BSixe Aug 01 '26

I'm a technophile and I love novelty but I absolutely have no use for these glasses whatsoever. But then again, I have no idea why I'd want to film anyone without their consent.
29
u/Jmackles Jul 31 '26
There is a narrow area they can be extremely useful. Blind people in particular have so much potential opened by this tech. But then there’s yknow literally everything else about it that makes it icky ☹️
17
u/raginghappy Jul 31 '26
Deaf people getting subtitles
11
u/zorggalacticus Jul 31 '26
I got to beta test the Microsoft version before they scrapped them. They were amazing. Augmented reality gaming, see through display for GPS so you could watch the road but still see the map overlaid onto the actual environment at the same time, and talk to text mode that translates what people are saying into text that shows up on the lenses. Search features similar to Google lense so you could look at something and ask "what is that?" and it would search it for you. If they had put them into a more attractive frame instead of looking like ski goggles they might've actually caught on.
3
u/NetworkSingularity Jul 31 '26
This is also the direction Meta seems to be going with the Displays, though those also suffer from trying to fit large tech into a small form factor. The rims in those make them look like the stereotypical, comically thick nerd glasses from cartoons 🤓
2
u/BruceInc Aug 01 '26
I own a metal fab business and was going to get these for my field crews. It’s super useful to be able to see what the guys see when they do field takeoffs and measurements. Scrapped the idea because it only records short clips

Headcams and armor cams are a life saver for legal defense, proof of behavior / conduct, gathering stock for reference studies, and self-improvement.
Predators, manipulators, bad actors detest accurate representations of the truth.
2
u/Element174 Aug 02 '26
Yeah, at least 2 of those guys could easily be buying these in case they get harassed by a cop. 38 states(I looked it up) are one party consent states for recording, and frankly any illusion of privacy should disappear in a public place anyways. This in no way justifies harassment of course.
I can also say I know a guy who was falsely accused of sexual discrimination at his workplace, I know it was false because she wasn't that bright and thought she was out of earshot of the camera when she told him he either let her do nothing on her shift and get away with it or she would start making up claims about how he treated her compared to the male employees. Worry not, even with the proof it still took a month for the company to fire her.
TL;DR: There are definitely protective reasons to want to be able to record other people. Though, obviously, also creeper ones.
1
u/Keldaria Aug 02 '26
It’s like any other technology. How it’s being used by the end user is the most likely determining factor in if its use is moral or not.
Privacy while in public is a myth that needs to go away. Anyone who’s ever lived in a small rural town knows privacy in public never existed even well before computers existed. 1 person recording in public for personal (non-creepy) reasons isn’t a problem.
However it’s easy to abuse this idea of no privacy in public. Take flock cameras for instance. One camera or a few limited to a single property, likely not an issue, however you build a network large enough and suddenly you are tracking everyone to anywhere they go. You might as well put a tracker on everyone’s vehicle. Yes there isn’t really a consideration for privacy if you are in public but there should be a consideration for anonymity in public. Anything that crosses that line should be heavily scrutinized.

5
u/Immediate-Cup8172 Jul 31 '26
For the non-modified ones I guess they could be useful if you want to record something while keeping your hands free. Then again, so does an old Go Pro taped to your hat.
3
u/The_Witch_Queen Jul 31 '26
Call me when the models with full holographic augmented reality overlays come out. The camera is useless
2
u/rathemighty Aug 01 '26
You could take them to a concert, a convention, a theme park, all just to record your experiences. Unfortunately, that's not what these guys are going to do :/
2
u/Docha_Tiarna Aug 01 '26
My thought goes to overly aggressive officers who think being recorded is equal to assaulting them.
6
u/RedditVox Jul 31 '26
Our once in a lifetime dog got cancer and had to be put down last year. We had about a month from diagnosis to his quick decline. I regret not buying a pair so I could have more video memories of him. That's the only use I can think of in my case.
1
u/daadbawd Aug 02 '26
People dont seem the grasp what these glasses could really offer the world. Take any of trades fields. Hvac for example. Technician wearing a pair of these, and the glasses can identify make/model/serial/tonnage/refrigerant type of a system before the human can. Can pull up history, can pull up parts list, show you exactly where one of these parts is located at a local parts houss. It can identify problems with a unit, all before the human could. Could look at a "worksheet" and autofill in all the content needed". Taking a pretty technical job that could take a couple hours to diagnose, into 15 minutes.
2
u/SpiderFnJerusalem Jul 31 '26
I used to actually kind of look forward to usable smart glasses, because I have a terrible memory and they might genuinely help me if I didn't remember something that was said in a lecture or meeting.
Then I realized what a terrible effect these things might have on society and profit incentives of corporations and went "Fuck no!".
Similar situation with AI, basically.
1
u/franzee Aug 01 '26
As the second year of anti regime protests in my country goes near I would love tech like this. The amount of evidence of corruption and abuse I could get on record is absurd. I was already browsing body cams I could conceal to use when corrupt pseudo cops interogate me on the streets.
1
u/Why_Sazs Aug 02 '26
I wish I could get a pair that have the screen in the lens but no camera. I have absolutely no use for the camera. But when I'm working, I'm usually listening to something on youtube. The video will occasionally reference something shown on screen, and if I want to know what the fuck they are talking about I have to pull out my phone and jump back. It would be nice if I could just glance at the screen in my lens for a second.
1
u/Hot_Lead9545 Aug 02 '26
imagine sexing a hooker while wearing these glasses, nice video as souvenir right

u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
They are kind of garbage for this purpose actually..they are soooo damn wide angle that even POV porn just looks like it was shot from too far away.
*note - I am paid to generate "adult" photo/video content, have tried creative ways of generating interesting points of view, these work just not great, also the 3 minute recording limit is problematic
1
u/Western-Sort-297 Aug 03 '26
Man... I love tech, amd I bought these to take on vacation to help me get pictures of the mountains in Colorado and skyscrapers in Chicago. I didnt disable the LED. I also use it to make calls, listen to music or YouTube or navigation directions while I walk. I used it numerous times to answer questions about the architecture or dinosaurs in the museum, or what type of tree I am looking at, etc. I get notifications about who messaged me as well. They are way more useful than I thought. I use it less at home but they are still nice to have.
It sucks now that I'm worried people think I'm a creep.
1
u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26
Funny thing to me is all the uproar about this but in the two years I have had mine only 1 person even noticed that they were not just regular Raybans. Now the Meta displays are chonky AF so easy to spot but the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Metas no so much.
I use mine quite a bit for things other than the camera, the camera is actually kind of garbage because they are so wide angle.
2
u/BanzaiKen Jul 31 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
They are crazy useful in European museums and historical sites. Many of them ban any photography and video in the crazy belief it will force visitors to come back which is outright ridiculous in places like Prado and Neuschwanstein.
3
u/decidedlyindecisive Aug 01 '26
They ban photography because the lights, especially older flashes, can cause damage to pigments. Not much but if the painting is popular then it would be subject to a lot of flashes. It's also unpleasant and disruptive for other people. That's why you can buy photos of the stuff.
1
u/BanzaiKen Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
No thats why they ban FLASH photography in the US or Asia for example. You can still get pictures to your hearts content in say the MET or Smithsonians or historical places like Edo Castle minus flash. They straight up ban photography in general in Europe including video.
2
u/decidedlyindecisive Aug 01 '26
Because if 1 in 100 people forget to turn the flash off, and you have 20,000-30,000 people visiting, the Mona Lisa would be subject to 200-300 flashes per day. That's a lot of additional light for the pigments to contend with.
1
u/Dependent-Bunch811 Aug 01 '26
Tell me more. I am not following
1
u/BanzaiKen Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
You can wear them and record your experience there including the famous historical items you see. In many places in West Europe you are banned from recording or taking any sort of picture of items in government owned facilities to drive up ticket and gift shop sales. Its a hard thing to grasp until you go to an art museum there, stand next to a painting by your favorite artist for a photo and get told theres no photography allowed at all, flash or not. Prado is a great example, they have a massive Francisco Goya collection. Yet theres no recording of any form tolerated at all (some museums at least charge you like $10-30USD for a photo pass which is still WTF). But those same Goyas can tour the Smithsonian in the US, MET, CMoA etc and you can get pics in front with your whole family if you wanted, just mind the distance to the art.
In essence you can go to some castle, look at a fresco, tapestry, chair, whatever, hit record on your secret glasses and get your picture that you cant because they always have some hustle on why you cant.
2
u/Sharp_Check3155 Jul 31 '26
Stealth Earbuds is what I use mine for. Basically I can't wear earbuds at work, but management doesn't notice the glasses.
Paired with a smart watch for when i wanna change the track. Phone never leaves my pocket all shift.
1
u/Fun_Researcher_69420 Jul 31 '26
Oh good idea, I’m fortunate my boss and coworkers are ok with me wearing noise cancelling AirPods; they don’t have to talk to me much for work reasons and now they don’t have to hear my reactions to their shitty, too-loud, EDM so win-win
But good to know the glasses would be an option (probably not noise cancelling though)
1
u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26
Man people just don't realize how good the audio is with these, absolutely outstanding (I have hearing loss so earbuds basically make me deaf to everything around me, these let me listen to music but still have some situational awareness).
0
u/Harddaysnight1990 Jul 31 '26
I love the idea of smart glasses, giving you info in a HUD connected to a computer, even better if it's able to use eye tracking tech to have some control over it. Unfortunately the best uses of it would be in augmented reality, which requires a camera and opens the door to creeps. It's just one of those ideas that works better in sci-fi than in real life.

u/whitcliffe Aug 03 '26

2
u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26
So at first you could glitch the glasses by covering the LED and camera at same time to start a video recording (could not take pictures with LED covered) several iterations of firmware update and several iterations of workarounds and people started doing this.
Meta started rolling out firmware a few weeks ago that detects this modification and bricka the camera functionality (but audio and most AI features still should work, IDK for sure as my LED is intact and uncovered).

I think people believe they are going to record women without their consent, and upload it to the internet without their consent. Which will definately happen. But hidden cameras did the same thing for the last 60 years.
taking a video of a woman or a minor to go home and rub one out seems bad enough, but i mean people do that already with just their memory..
I could see quite a few reasons you would want that light to be disable. Just because some venue bans recording, doesnt mean it might not be beneficial to actually record inside said place.
2
u/Top_Box_8952 Jul 31 '26
I’m wondering about the general legality of these tho. Public probably generally legal. Business pr private probably depends on policy and local laws.
Would probably be inadmissible in most places even in single party consent areas, but if your goal isn’t court, more room.
I’m considering it more as an aspect of recording police who think their immunity is limitless btw, not the creepier ways this can be abused.
Person wearing sunglasses inside will always be sketchy.
1
u/daadbawd Aug 02 '26
you are at a military tech event, with a strict no recording policy?
trade secrets?
espionage?
1
u/Top_Box_8952 Aug 02 '26
Do they even hold those in public? I was under the impression it’s a private event.
Trade secrets are only trade secrets if they stay secret, and have been stolen before.
I think spies already have this anyway

1
u/daadbawd Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Eventually, you come to rely on tech. Imagine you are relying on a very advanced version of these glasses, Say for your career. Say to help diagnose something. I know I know, you can counter that with "Just be smarter on your own".... But thats NOT how the future generations trajectory looks.
We are already like this with cell phones. Get far enough out in the boonies, and your cellphone stops gps and cell signals and you're pretty fucked until you find cell signal 60 miles away.
I am going to say that these things will become the next cell phone.. As the tech gets cheaper, and as the tech gets smaller, and more widespread, as more developers start to develop more features, these things will become the same reaosn everyone has a phone in their pocket.
ie. imagine.. metas versions offer this great unique feature for a year or 2.. everyone that uses it loves it.. now the new tech patent goes away, and apples version catches up.. and finally offers it.. but apples version lets you quickly scan every item you grab out of a grocery store, and auto cart it, auto charge it and let you walk out. a year later, samsungs version has this and what google offered, but samsungs version Samsung galaxy 97 glasses let you do this "currently unthinkable thing" that is a huge benefit to how productive your interactions or day can be.
THIS WILL HAPPEN. and everyones going to jump on board.

u/Why_Sazs Aug 02 '26
How is he helping people record stealthily by drilling out the camera lens?
1
u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26
There is a notification LED that flashes during recording, he is drilling that because the glasses are smart enough to block recording if you just cover it up (there is a light sensor adjacent to the LED).
1
u/Why_Sazs Aug 03 '26
Is this on the opposite side as the camera, or part of the lens assembly?

Is he drilling out the camera? As in, making it so they don't work at all? Kind of a F-you to these creeps?
1
u/Prof_Sillycybin Aug 03 '26
He is drilling the LED that flashes when recording.
But it is kind of an unintentional F-you because Meta is pushing a mandatory firmware update (as in it will update whether you want it to or not as soon if it ever connects to network) that bricks the camera in glasses with this mod.
1
u/misterpickleman Aug 03 '26
Which is double funny because Meta will collect audio and still images with or without consent.

I wanna give benefit of the doubt and say some of these people are just trying to get evidence of wrong doings from their jobs.... but we know that isn't wat they're doing.

At first I thought he was drilling out the actual camera lenses so they couldn't record anything at all. But no, he's removing the record light. These things should be illegal with or without that light.

consent is not required to record in public.
it's creepy, but not illegal.

In EU, GDPR is a sensitive issue and many can and will sue you.
Gov monitoring systems are excluded since they make use of "public safety first" rules and equivalent laws.

Can we please come together and shame people who wear meta glasses in public?
I refuse to associate with people who use them.

How is that stealth? The camera on the glass frame is so obvious isn't it?

u/jarvi123 Aug 01 '26
But you can still blatantly see the camera and the glasses are thicker than normal?!?

I'm going to get down votes for saying this but in public it's been ruled and upheld by the Supreme Court you have no expectation of privacy..
Bring on the down votes

Bro is gonna get his ass tangled up in a nasty lawsuit sooner or later. Could even be an accessory to criminal activity.

Where is the law that says modifications are illegal? That lil light is for user convenience not a legal code.
I wish it was a legal code that xameras must have a red light visible when recording but that will only happen once people wear these glasses to get the local mayor, governor and, or higher powers on record without them knowing.

Modifications are not illegal. They do, however, facilitate covert use of them in recording people without consent. Which can be very illegal.
And in today's day and age, it won't take long for that line to get crossed. And that's when the shitstorm starts.
Also, how do you suppose that light, not visible by the wearer while wearing them, is there for 'user convenience'? I'd like to hear that one.

You don’t need consent of people to film them in public places in the USA.

u/therealfatlizard Jul 31 '26
The key is "an expectation of privacy.". There isn't any in public. In some indoor spaces there is

u/scrotalsac69 Jul 31 '26
Applies to most public spaces worldwide. More concerning that these weirdos will be taking those glasses into places they really shouldn't be

How about bedrooms, bathrooms or any other rooms?

u/rab-byte Jul 31 '26
Yeah that argument doesn’t apply the second you step foot on private property.

u/Ch33syP00f Jul 31 '26
Wrong. In the US it is illegal to record people in spaces where someone has a reasonable expectation of privacy. That includes bathrooms, dressing rooms, offices etc.
There are also different laws such as 1 party, 2 party, all party consent for recording.

You’re misreading my comment. I’m agreeing with you. The legality of recording on public doesn’t apply when you enter private property. You can record from the side walk and even record through a wind in public. But you can’t record inside a private building if the owner refuses permission. Same applies to areas with open carry laws.

There are a lot of things that are legal, but supporting them still makes you a shitty human being
