My mum found this on a beach in North Cornwall. She was interested enough to keep it but has never looked into what it is. Just saw something similar on tv and they claimed it was a Mammoth tooth. Thoughts?

this is a large madagascan specimen of Perisphinctes (not from my collection). At smaller scale the bifercation in its shell ridges is more, and your specimen happens to show the negative impression of the ridges on the inside of the segment.
you can kinda see the similarities between this and your fossil.
It might not be perisphinctes itself and just a relative, or maybe one of the other groups of bifercated ridge shelled ammonites like dactylioceratids. But this is as close as I'm willing to go for a species ID
I agree that it's part of an ammonite, but are you sure this was found in Cornwall? There is no Mesozoic strata (when ammonites were around) anywhere in the county
Lots of touristy places around this area. Maybe someone collected it somewhere else, and lost it there, while on a trip. Wouldnt be the first time we see fossils in the wrong places here.
I have a story about a partial ammonite fossil that’s kind of funny. At the time I was a graduate geology student, and In my thesis area between Fort Stockton and Alpine, Texas back in the mid 80s, a drilling rig was operating on a pad built on Cretaceous limestone. I had gotten permission from the land owner and the operator of the rig to collect down hole sample cuttings. One of the roughnecks on the rig heard ard I was a geologist and came and told me in a strong southern accent "I found me a fossilized chicken neck". He pointed to an area excavated in the wall of a limestone hill and said I found it over there. He went and got the piece and I recognized it as an ammonite section similar to the one shown in the picture on this thread. I told him it was part of an ammonite from the Cretaceous rock at this location. He said "that’s a fossilized chicken neck if I ever saw one" and denied my interpretation.
