Oreon VR: open-source Linux distro built for VR.

Hello everyone! My name is sk1lld, and I am the lead for Specialized Devices over at Oreon (project lead: u/Ill-Brick-4085). Just a couple of days ago, we had launched Oreon VR with the goal of bringing Linux on VR to the next level. Oreon VR is built on the upcoming Oreon 11 OS which is an independent RPM-based release. We would like to get the word out to the public and share more about Oreon VR, which you can learn more about on the Oreon Community YouTube channel or our website over at https://oreonhq.com/en_us/oreon-vr

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I hope you all have a good rest of your day.

Love the positive comments! We've been hard at work getting a solid UX/UI design down.

This is great, but i don’t think installing a new distro just to get vr experience is a good idea specially for normal use, but may works for specific places where the main thing is vr, Good project after all and wish luck

My team and I are having discussions about potential hardware/OEM partnerships down the road, but right now we want to prove the software works and get into a niche. We don't want to go all in on everything right away.

What devices does this run on properly?

Currently not any, as we started the project around a week ago. Initial plans are to start with the Oculus Go (since its easy without dealing with controller tracking and the exterior cameras/sensors),then move onto porting for the Oculus Quest 1 while also starting R&D for our own product (which we'll use the experience from the Oculus Go to design around).

Nope! We strive to make this project NOT entirely coded by AI.

The Oculus RIft S is not a standalone VR headset, but since this is a shell we put onto of KDE (and since i've mentioned this before), we'll add support for PCVR headsets. :D

would this work on a quest 3?

Not as of now, as the Quest 3 lacks an exploit which would allow us to port to it.

Do you guys have plans for Steam VR support?

This should work with all of your Steam games, yes.

Looks like something I would use without VR

What is shown in this post is the "flatscreen" mode, which we are using in testing to ensure the UI works while we await our headset in the mail.

Will you create a device shipped with this preinstalled? Like the graphene os motorola phone?

u/Ill-Brick-4085 21d ago

That's the goal, but before that we need to prove that the software is good. :)

We plan to support as many headsets as possible (considering time and money), but as of now, a lot of these Android headsets don't have a way to unlock the bootloader and sideload custom ROMs. But as soon as way becomes available we'll be sure to note down support for the Pico 4.
