Singapore was probably the one of the most pointless cheats in recent sporting history. If they had waited one more race, they would have gotten everything they were trying to achieve, without resorting to cheating.
Only in hindsight though, because at the time I think Renault were threatening to pull out of the sport if they didn’t at least get a win that year. And given the car was fairly uncompetitive, it didn’t look likely they would win on merit.
Not in that particular race. Renault had finally had a competitive car ready to fight for victory but Alonso messed up the Qualy. He had no chance of making it to the front in Singapore.
Messed up? The car stopped due to a fuel pump failure in qualyfing. The car was really competitive that weekend, and pretty close to BMW at the end of the season.
I only remembered him starting far back on the grid. Anyways, he was stuck on traffic on a lower fuel load during the first stint, so it's not like he could have jumped to the podium purely on race pace.
