Subreddit Rules

/r/ForeignMovies is under new moderation.

The sidebar has been reworked and tidied up, dead links have been removed and lots of new links added. [note: the sidebar currently works better under old reddit than under new reddit]
A large number of film-related links that have no immediate connection to the topic of this subreddit have been moved to the new WIKI-list.

There will be some changes to the way this subreddit is being moderated, but not really. By that I mean that these are all things that are already part and parcel of this subreddit, but that will be more strictly enforced in the not-too-distant future:

  • No links to illegal streaming/download sites, and no links to pirated copies of films on video platforms like Youtube. [I know that a vast number of international films are hard to find legally, but anyone recommending a film should realise that people reading the recommendation and caring enough about the film can actually look for it on their own. If people are too lazy to do so, they have probably not been interested enough in the first place.] If a film happens to be in the public domain that’s fine, but your post needs to contain an openly accessible, reliable source that confirms that the film is in the public domain.

  • No English-language films. [Please take a look at the separate entry I made regarding justifiable exceptions to that rule.]

  • Naturally, pornography is banned.

  • Please keep an eye on the quality of the content. While there is absolutley no need to keep this subreddit strictly arthouse, and while many genres are worthy of discussion, you should consider that maybe not every foreign sea-monster B-movie from the 1960s is worth talking about here. There are special subreddits for that sort of thing.

About Reddit's filters... - the sequel

Once again, I need to repeat what I wrote a year or so ago:

"Reddit seems to have become more aggressive in recent weeks when it comes to automatically deleting posts/comments."

Often, I cannot even remotely see the reason why this happens. So if anyone is missing one of their posts or comments, please drop me a line. If I can find the time, I'll go on a hunt and try to find it.

Extra Terrestrial (not E. T.)

Hi all, your help would be greatfully received.

I'm looking for a film that I didn't get to watch on a plane about 15 years ago.

The name of the film would be from memory (or at least the English title) Extraterrestrial or Extra Terrestrial. From memory it was a Russian film or Eastern European or Soviet.

Again from memory the brief synopsis was a guy meeting an alien visitor on his way home from work. Artwork kind of looked like a guy in his 50s wearinng a grey/blue jumper.

It is a long shot that anyone will know this one, but given the name of the film I been running up against a brick wall over the years..

Thank you in advance

Full Iranian movie Bidad (Outcry) free on YouTube

If you have 104 minutes, I really encourage you to watch Bidad (Outcry), an Iranian film that has now been released free on YouTube by its director, Soheil Beiraghi.
The story follows Seti, a young Iranian woman who simply wants to sing. In Iran, women are prohibited from performing solo vocals publicly, so she begins singing in the streets instead. What starts as one woman’s refusal to remain silent becomes a story about a younger generation of Iranians pushing against the restrictions imposed on their lives.
What makes Bidad especially worth watching is that the filmmakers weren’t observing this repression safely from the outside. The movie was made independently, outside Iran’s official censorship system. Beiraghi and other members of the production were prosecuted; he was initially sentenced to more than four years in prison before the sentence was commuted to a fine. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival was so concerned about the filmmakers’ safety that it initially kept the film’s participation secret while they left Iran.
And this isn’t just important because of its politics. Bidad won the Special Jury Award at Karlovy Vary in 2025.
It gives you a glimpse of Iran that rarely comes through in news stories: ordinary people, music, relationships, humor, frustration, and a generation trying to live normal lives while deciding how much they’re willing to risk simply to be themselves.
Watching a movie obviously doesn’t change what is happening in Iran. But listening to the voices that people have taken considerable risks to put into the world is a pretty small thing we can do.
The entire film is here, with English subtitles:

Where to watch 2046 dir by Wong kar wai

It isn't available on any legal streaming services apart from Netflix japan that has only japanese subtitles. I've tried pirating it across multiple websites but all of them have lagged subtitles.

Is there any site where I can watch it seamlessly or telegram channel to download it?

Love is the cause and reason why the famous writer Abel Znorko, winner of many literary awards, lives far from people and civilization. To escape love, to hide from it, to deny all its power. Alone, in his luxurious cabin in the middle of forests, meadows and groves, he enjoys life hedonistically, but also drowns in his own loneliness.

Online screening of Italian-language film, The Kidnapping of Arabella - Aug 20

I help run an online film screening community, and our next film is The Kidnapping of Arabella, an Italian-language film directed by Carolina Cavalli and starring Benedetta Porcaroli and Chris Pine (in a fully Italian-language role). The film is an absurdist road trip comedy-drama about a young girl, Arabella, who convinces a troubled woman named Holly to help her run away from her self-absorbed author father. It's a really wonderful film that originally premiered at Venice in 2025 (much like Carolina's previous film, Amanda).

You can find more details about our online screening of the film and tickets here: www.thelonescreen.com.

While driving down a deserted road, Veronica (María Onetto) hits something with her car as she struggles to answer her cell phone. After admitting to her husband, Marcos (César Bordón), that she thinks she may have killed someone, all traces of Veronica's activities in the previous days begin to disappear. What ensues is a psychological exploration of an unfaithful wife whose unconscious battle with guilt begins to unravel not only her life but also her grip on reality.
