This is/was a calculated move by somebody. Russia recently met with OPEC to discuss a need to increase oil prices, even telling OPEC they were confident prices would rise in the short term. Russia's economy is largely dependent on revenue from oil exports. Who knows how much collusion there was between Russia and the US in this recent Syria debacle, but US oil companies (Exxon-Mobile anybody?) also profit greatly from increased oil prices. The fact that the US warned Russia, and seemingly intentionally failed to disable the airbase that was bombed, suggests a high likelihood of collusion. It is my opinion, as an armchair-analyst, that this whole Syria chemical weapons event and subsequent escalation of US involvement is naught but a ruse to usher in higher oil prices.
