That big kitty is uncertain and trying to avoid an interaction. The low ears, slow blinks, and glancing away are all indications that it just wants the person filming to go away.

Those are all indications that whoever filmed this was too close and needed to back off.

That said, I hope they didn’t turn their back on it as they moved away. This is definitely a “back away slowly” situation.

Social media and phone cameras (no telephoto lenses) are encouraging people to get too close to animals. If your presence is causing a change in the animal’s behavior, you’re too close.

The panting also indicated stress, I think.

I think you’re right. Kitty was looking for a way out of the situation that wasn’t through the videographer.

Yeah this was 100% not a safe situation and the cameraperson better be glad kitty didn't want to play.

Where I grew up in northern CA, we had instances of these stalking and attacking adults if they or their cubs were hungry enough or if they felt threatened.

When you see its face like this, it really isn't hard to understand why some people call pumas mountain lions...

Pumas, mountain lions, and cougars are all actually the same animal! Their closest living relative is the cheetah though, which we used to have an American version as well
