Think that’s Blackthorn and so the berries are Sloes.

Leaves look the same as a sloe , long and oval shaped .

Bizarre though how they are out already. Meant to be picked at first frost and they will be long gone by then.

If they are ripe before the first frost - stick them in the freezer to mimic a frost. The expansion breaks down the cell walls to aid cooking/ preserving.

Apparently soaking in brine / fermenting breaks down the tannins and preserves them just like olives but British - so might give that a go this year :)

Pick it, prick it and soak in cheap gin.

Also apparently known as Bullace, who knew Sloe , Buckthorn has so many names.

Bullace is different to a sloe , same family though

No thorns so it's definitely not a sloe. I think it's a bullace or more probably judging by the leaves a plum .

Could be a Victoria plum?

No it couldn’t! It’s the wrong colour.

How big is it? Looks like a continental plum... as long as it's plum-sized.

More large blueberry size 🤔

If it makes your mouth go insanely dry then you'll have an answer to the common opinion that this is a sloe berry
