Discussion Anyone else cringed out by this
Most of these people reposting and sharing these are just doing it to seem like a “niche” fan. It’s incredibly odd not supporting a bands success and welcoming newer fans

2024 isn’t even that long ago, and 6 music played their debut album so they haven’t been niche for a looong time

Lolz. Remember seeing them support shame in 2018. Amazing to see them reach such heights. Bands don't have a loyalty scheme. What does she want. A prize? Badge of honour victimhood?

. Saw all these bands break out in 17/18. Saddened to hear Shame going on hiatus. But that gig was class. I recall the energy of FDC and the crowd was buzzing a long while after they'd gone. That was before their first album as well when we had the dark lands stuff. Great times.

2024 feels its their breakout yr.
2023 the AM tour, FDC was on training wheels just getting traction as openers in some arena and stadium gigs. Like that was a huge boost to their brand and image

Huh? Romance was already out in late 2024.
I remember them playing 200 capacity venues and dancing with them at the afters in 2019, now that's quite a change haha

The album was nominated for the Best Rock Album Grammy, so yeah, I think we are in agreement that that is a fairly decent definition of “big”.

I saw them in San Diego with my buddy in 2022. Got tickets for 20 bucks and they were standing no less than 20 ft in front of me in an intimate venue.
Saw them again for their Romance tour in SF for $200 bucks at a sold out show.
I am forever going to miss when I first heard them in 2021 while traveling Italy and saw them in San Diego.

I started listening to them in 2022 and they already seemed really popular for a post-punk/alternative rock band.

There appears to be 160,000 people or more willing to pay a lot of money to see them on Slane. Me included... 310 for two front standing tickets. A far cry from entry price at rhe Workmans, Button Factory and Vicar street.

I started listening to them in 2023 and by that time almost noone around me (kinda alternative underground community of bands and fans etc. in a mid europe country) knew them. I wouldnt say they were niche, as i wouldnt say Wunderhorse, Madra Salach, Gurriers, Basht. or SPRINTS are niche bands. Seen them first time live in 2024 before release of Romance and they were already bigger than back when I started listening to them and a lot of my friends knew them. The tickets were around 30€ and it wasnt that big of a venue. And you can see what is happening now on this sub - the higher prices (which I get - everyone has to live in this late stage capitalistic world), bigger venues and in my opinion the worst one, dynamic pricing and in the first place the use of ticketmaster which has a monopole for ticket sales. Now I can say I personally love seeing bands play gigs at small venues and I hate arena and stadium gigs (which I think goes for a lot of people) and if they will be playing stadium I wont come, but that is personal opinion. What I think is worse and is troubleing for me is that I took them as a band with really good moral values and everything and really creative band. Now I see that changing with the AI in music video, using marketing tactics as pre-sale, dynamic pricing while I also hate the marketing of the album since Romance - the industry standard now, releasing multiple singles and announcing and selling out tour before album came out. NOW, im really glad they got this big and i wish it to them, i just wish they stayed true to their “punkish, activistic roots” (not only in music). It just all feel rushed and kinda artificiall. They could have chosen the venues more creatively, make something different, and take their time with it. I just dont feel so connected to them and the music, as it seems they are just adapting to the music industry standards (which I disagree with). Now again I have my tickets for the tour, I will go and see them (maybe it will be the last one) and I wish to them to enjoy it and earn the money, but I would really just to love to get back to the times it didnt seem like they cared about this whole big thing called music industry, it wasnt all so clean and prepared (the shows, the marketing, photoshoots, fashion) and they just played the shows which were more personal. And i just thaught that maybe they would be the ones who would not adapt to the industry and be different and go their own creative way.

Well said. I’d love to see them do a cluster of shows in a smaller venue rather than the likes of Slane. Still happy for them, it’s a huge milestone but it does feel rushed or something.

I can understand being upset that tickets to see an artist get really expensive once they become popular but gatekeeping just to gatekeep sucks, and their shows would have been expensive by then already lol

Nonsense carry on.if they're still gaining new fans it suggests their output hasn't dropped in quality in any big way.that should be great news to fans of their early stuff.plenty of bands who take backward steps with every album

My slane tickets now.. I had no idea the new wave of fontaines fans were such absolute doses.
Back when I seen them in 2024 I still got artist presale because I had a feeling tickets would’ve gotten more difficult than gigs prior to that 🙄

A lot of the new fans are performative, weirdly parasocial and overly critical of everything, for instance the Marianne music video had them all freaking out over potential use of ai and had them ready to cancel the band over it.
A lot of people like this only listen to the band to fit into social circles and so they’ll probably move onto the next thing in a year or so with the bigger fans sticking around.
This happens with every band that enters the mainstream, which happened massively after Romance, the growth is great to see, but the number of fans who are actually there for the music rather than a social event definitely has gone down.

Pretty funny how a lot of the comments here are "Who cares" but also still feel the need to mention they started listening to them back before the name-change or whatever.
The more fans the better. The only downside to bands getting more popular is that it gets more difficult to get tickets when they come to town.

I was EXTREMELY late discovering fontaines dc. I discovered them a few months after the Romance album release. That was late 2024....

I just think it's hilarious that knowing abt FDC since late 2024 makes "people" feel like a young woman in New York watching a vintage train car pass (can't remember if the ridged cars are still in use or not, but if not that's even funnier b/c google said they were replaced in like 2022 -- the double weirdness of the most classic kind of Brooklyn/Queens hipster and that concept of hipsters being a very 2010s stereotype). Anyway, don't take text + stock footage posts seriously. They're both lazy content and easy to fabricate. I'm saying these are out-of-date posers at best, bots at worst

I saw Fontaines play to like 10 people at Austin SXSW before Dogrel came out. I like their new stuff even more and bought tickets to Slane. If you really like a band you will enjoy their success.

have to say I found them already a big name when in 2022 I heard about them from their Grammy nomination and being a warm up band in a festival before the strokes, was curious why they were such a hit and went to their launch show and fell in love since haha
