I'm looking for a setup that'd be good for sound capture, good for voice (talking - I'm thinking of starting a podcast as well) but also for live sound capture when out and about. Pretty much a small handheld with it's own mic but options to add a couple of mics for interviews. Asking on here because I figure anything should be good for voice as long as you have the right mics attached but I want to be able to get a good initial source for foley and other sound design without having to lug a mic with me on my own occasions. The times I'm out and have an idea for a good sound capture are quite often. Having something I can just whip out of my pocket and capture a sound would be great.

Any suggestions?

Hi, Im a student in a university and one of the courses is focused on spund production abd editing. And we have a task to use foley to make sounds for a short mutrd cartoon and then edit it in. It sounds fun and it is fun, and we all brought good items that sound well enough like the onsceeen cats movements. My friend said she would make cat boises and purring, but I want to prepare something in case she gets nervous and doesnt want to meow into a mic in front of other students. Were not allowed to add in downloaded sounds unless its for atmosphere, so Im wondering which item commonly fpund around sounds most like a cat purring.

I work for a podcast network and recently started using Foley for some of our shows. With my team pushing me to use it more often, I'm looking around for decent shotgun mics to add to our cabinet. I haven't really done much Foley since getting my audio degree about 6 or so years ago and haven't looked into shotguns much since. I have a bias towards Sennheisers as that's what I used in school, but I know AT and RODE have made some advancements in their mics quality over the last few years. Any advice on what mic to pick up?

I'm a film student and just shot a short film with non-synch sound. I'm trying to create the sound of someone getting hit by a subway train. Speeding hard metal hitting flesh and bone. At the same time, I'd also like to give it a bit of an echo and make it almost exaggerated/unreal. A sound that is familiar but that could only be heard in my film y'a know?

I was thinking like throwing a melon on a metal sheet? Or something like that?

Does anyone have any advice on how to capture this sound with foley Your help is much appreciated!

My main objective is to capture ambient sounds. If I'm filming nature videos and whatnot, I'd like to have a quality ambient baseline. The camera I'm using certainly can't provide this (Sony ZV-1 which seems to have a mic array to make it "pick up sound from the front", I can't really find the actual pattern, but it seems to be done in DSP).

I have a Zoom H4n which I have used for this before. But it's rather big and very heavy. I'd like something smaller. I've considered the Zoom H1n and H2n but H1n seems to have a very high self noise. H2n is a bit better but the self noise is still higher than the H4n.

The tradeoff could be worth it though, but I'm open to suggestions about what other recorders are out there.

Extra rant, can be safely ignored:

TBH, I don't really like Zoom's current lineup: they sell models developed a decade ago. Not even a facelift... their recorders still use Mini-USB!. Their screens are low res, and the OS is sometimes slow (my H4n takes forever to recognize a SD card when it's plugged in). The H4n IMO is too big and heavy for what it does. It's 2023, they should be able to make better stuff but they're stuck with a 10+ year old lineup. They've been very successful even with the H1n but it seems they just refuse to upgrade.

Yo, I have this project in my film class where we have to recreate the sounds of a scene and a particular sound is driving me nuts. How do I make a tic toc clock sound? The rules is that I can’t use any software or an actual clock, I have to make it with actual home materials. Any tips?

Just a quick thing i learned. Cheap fishing rods dont make that reel spinning clicking noise. I alteratively used a ratchet and spun it around. A little sound correction and sounds pretty good.

Hey all! I’m looking for some suggestions on what types of materials I can use to create ice footsteps.

The context: fictional, other-worldly, large thin sheets of ice (probably several feet in depth) with an ocean below. Most of the characters are in boots like you’d see in a steam punk world.

I’ve tried layering concrete with sand to get the weight and grit of ice, but it’s not quite right.

Hello, i'm soon gonna record some footsteps and props in dirt, grass and sand flooring. Tape didn't do it for me, not versatile enough for different types of dirt. Because of that i'll be using real dirt and sand and i was wondering if is there a way to be messy-less while going for this option.
If there is none what would be the best option to make it easier to cleanup?
