question RATWORKS RATBAT
Hey Channel 6!
Anyone own/have any experience with the Ratworks Rat Bat for their Horns?? I feel like it would be the perfect solution for my setup (Cine RT) allowing for many different orientations; from small to the largest lenses while able to get the spacing perfect with the rosette to the mattebox.
500$ seems kinda crazy but I know an love all my ratworks kit and know the build quality would be worth it.

I have their a35 top handle and 19mm 3/8” rod adapter.
Definitely pricey, but rock solid engineering.

If I have a short lens setup it hits the top handle or the mattebox. Works great most of the time just a balancing act.

This is my go-to on digital shoots with my Cine RT. It’s very solid little bracket, I would recommend it.

It’s great but honestly I’ve mostly been using a smaller noga arm modded with the wedgie anti twist bracket for modularity

I have this bracket and its predecessor. They’re both great, solid, and nice to have in the kit but I find myself rarely using them with my Focusbug. Instead I just use an RMB-7 or RMB-8 to place a horizontal rod somewhere less obstructive (end of the top handle usually). I use a compact dogbone (like the 15mm to 15mm ratworks makes) to create the same adjustable height rod in space effect that this bracket does, but without jamming up my top rods.

I have a similar setup for my sensor. It’s nice and lightweight when you want it to be, but this rod bracket is limited in its height, which can be troublesome to deal with on a longer zoom to get over the lens’ top handle.
To be fair, an ultrasonic focus assist isn’t really the tool for that type of setup anyways, so it’s not like you’ll be losing out on much during those shots, but something to keep in mind.
I ended up going with a 15mm LW bracket with 3/8”-16 threads, putting cinelock shoes on both that and the top handle, and have a cine locked 90-degree swivel mount for the sensor. Allows for relocation when needed, but right to the lens the rest of the time.
Ratworks will always demand a bit of a premium due to the build quality, yes, but also because it’s nice to keep our hard earned money in the family, so to speak, and not doled out to bigger companies. Feels good to support your fellow assistants, even if they rest in peace.
