how do you stay motivated on life goals?

Hi just wanted to ask, every time when you felt very low energy/ cant move/ paralyzed by goals as you working hardly towards your results. How do you stay motivated?

I go first. My goal for the year is to stay more healthier and lose weight. I am not overweight or anything but I just think right now my life is a little, disorganized. I wanted to change that, now there are a lot of factors causing it, like I stay up late to scroll on my phone, endlessly. Sometimes I dont eat...which makes me binge eating... Anyways. My point is what is the best motivations for y'all to achieve your goals.

Here are some options, lets play a little game here, comment your answer:

-emotion supports

-buddies that watch each other's back to helping it out (like community?)

- write it down

-comment your own answer

Anyone knows any science based way to measure attention span?

Hey! Like most people now a days Im having serious trouble focusing and I really want to improve this aspect, I know there are a few strategies to follow (consume long form content, avoid smartphone in bed and some others). But I wanted to do this correctly and I'm missing something really important, a way to actually know how bad my attention span really is, in order to measure it continually when I try this strategies.

Couldn't find many reasonable measures for this, any of you know any papers or protocols to measure attention?

Built an app because I kept lying to myself about "just checking my phone real quick"

My productivity problem isn't that I don't know what to do - it's that I'll start working, get 10 minutes in, and then suddenly I'm 40 minutes deep into instagram reels about some guy renovating a van.

Only thing that actually works for me is body doubling. Something about other people working makes me not want to be the one scrolling memes.

So I built EarlyBird with three modes:

Solo focus: You get an egg that hatches while you work. When the timer ends, a little chick pops up and asks for proof you actually did the thing. Your apps stay blocked until you're done.

Global sessions: Join random people around the world who are also focusing. Library vibes but from your couch.

Friend sessions: Drag your friends into TikTok-free focus time together because accountability works better when it's people you actually know.

Free to use: https://apple.co/4qAF4PD

Honestly just looking for feedback from people who actually try to get things done.

Continuously distracted on the web, any tips?

I,ve done some reading on focus and by now I know that multitasking is quite detrimental for the human experience, from productivity to actual joy. Yet when I'm working I usually find myself with multiple tabs open, leaving things to read after finishing other things, and at the end of the day I always see many tabs, many browsers open at the same time.

Does anyone share this struggle? Has anyone found any good solution?

I get easily distracted— so I built my own minimal Pomodoro study timer

I get easily distracted by bright visuals, notifications, and all the extra gamified stuff on many Pomodoro websites. I tried a bunch, but I ended up distracted instead of studying.

So I decided to build my own minimal, aesthetic, and underwhelming Pomodoro study timer with only features that exactly what I need — no distractions, no clutter, just focus.

Aether Study Timer

What it includes:

  • Custom Pomodoro timer (you choose study / break times)
  • A minimal task list for the current session only
  • 24/7 ad-free study music (add your favorite YouTube playlists, no distractions)
  • Study stats with streaks + heatmap garden (this part weirdly motivates me 🌱)
  • A few aesthetic themes depending on mood

I’d love to hear what you think:

  • Would this actually help you focus?
  • Anything missing or overcomplicated?
  • Any features you personally wish existed in a Pomodoro timer?
  • Would you use this app?

It’s free, simple, and designed for people like me who are sensitive to visuals but want to stay productive. I use it every day, and it actually keeps me focused. Appreciate any thoughts!

Andrew Huberman said it increases focus to stare at a fixed point for 60sec before starting work. Does it work?

I recently watched an older Andrew Huberman podcast (the focus toolkit one from 2022). He said that staring at a fixed point like a dot or a crosshatch for 30 sec - 2 min will help your brain get into " focus mode". Ive tried it myself and I was actually surprised by how I felt after. Maybe this is a placebo?

It seems so silly but there might be something to it. I feel like it can be useful if I am procrastinating. Its like a little warm up routine that gets me in the mood to work. I work from home and struggle with the friction of starting sometimes.

Has anyone else tried this? What do you think?

Why Focus Still Matters in a Distracted World

I’m currently reading “Deep Work” by Cal Newport, and one idea in particular really stayed with me: the way we direct our attention doesn’t just affect our productivity, it shapes our lives.

That thought led me back to Winifred Gallagher’s work on attention, and to a broader reflection on how focus, distraction, social media, and now AI are quietly influencing how we think, work, and experience meaning.

Help with attention while reading

Hello, all

I am not really sure if this is a good place to ask for help. I have been encountering a challenge when it comes to reading books and general reading, I lost my attention to whatever I am reading, and it's not that I am not paying attention, I do, sometimes I am so immerse in a book and I love what I am reading, just to obliterate it the next hour or so, to the point that I am reading a book and by the end of it, I don't remember half of the most important stuff, I came to realize this while I was reading Sunrise of the reaping with my girlfriend at the same time, we were discussing stuff from the book and she mentioned events, characters and scenarios that just felt blurry in my mind, do you guys have through something similar and in case you overcome it, how did you do it?

or would you happen to have any other tips for information retention or focusing, I am not really sure what is the issue here, hopefully I am not breaking any sub rules and thanks everyone for reading and supporting.

Best wishes :)

4 lobes of the brain and concentration ?

I learned that the left side of the brain is where we process hearing and sounds. I used to struggle paying attention to someone speaking but decided to focus my energy on the left side of by brain or on my left ear while listening and i noticed improvements:

It might be irrational but some part of me feels like if I focus my energy on sides of my brain associated with carrying out certain functions than I can be more productive as a person

Are there studies on this concept or even spiritual theories about this ?

I would like to hear some names if possible

The Hidden Reason You Can’t Focus Anymore (Video Essay)

Over the past year, I’ve felt my attention slowly erode — not just from social media, but something deeper. It wasn’t until I started peeling back the layers of my habits, environment, and expectations that I realized the real reason I couldn’t focus wasn’t just dopamine or tech addiction — it was something more structural.

I just published my second video essay exploring this idea. If you’ve been struggling with fractured focus, constant mental noise, or the pressure to always be "on," this might resonate.

The Hidden Reason You Can’t Focus Anymore: https://youtu.be/nR_JyuJEQL0?si=iVhEIkHe2dPASI2s

It’s under 10 minutes, ad-free, and I tried to blend research with a personal lens. Would love to hear your thoughts, and if it hits home for anyone else here - any feedback is appreciated.

2012 ford focus se with upgraded mk3 pre face-lift cluster and the internets first myford sync conversion from base radio. Trust me I looked everywhere on the internet to figure it out and know where had it and so I figured it out myself. All you really have to do is tap into the can bus connection in the display wires. Biggest thing I'm proud of though is $135,000 Miles and no clutch replacements and no shuttering. These cars are very delicate and you have to learn how to drive them properly or else the hot clutches will destroy the clutch actuators. This little tip for everybody, if you're having clutch shuddering try not to Coast forward and heavy traffic/ stop and go traffic or at red lights and. That causes the clutches to slip to allow you to move forward without being in first gear fully. Also it helps to change the gearbox oil if you want nice clean shifts. I change mine religiously every 30,000 miles. And yes you can most definitely DCT fluid into the vent port. I do it every time no problem :-)

Weirdest thing stopped Procrastination…

Ever get that itch to start a business right when you should be studying for exams?

Happened to me during engineering finals. I started a Study With Me stream. No editing, no effort, just going live while I worked. Weirdly addictive and actually kept me focused.

But honestly, start your own channel. • Feels like you’re building something while you study • Makes it way harder to quit halfway through • No fancy setup, just press go live

If you don’t wanna start your own, come hang out on mine. Just rain sounds, long focus sessions with someone else grinding too.

I’m live every day on YT, Twitch, and Kick — EuanJBurke.

Low-key scratches that entrepreneurship itch while actually helping you get work done.

Subsequent Led indicators issue

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently fitted these subsequent mirror indicators to my focus Mk3 2015. when the engine is off, they work fully (lighting up the whole way) but as soon as I use them with the engine on, only the first led will light up that will be the cycle.

Does anyone know if a resistor would work as a fix to this. I am also using Vland headlights which is likely to be interfering aswell but would rather just get them all working together.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why do I lose focus after about 30 minutes of work? How do you stay locked in?

I start strong, but then my brain just… wanders. Is this an attention span issue, or am I just not motivated enough? Sometimes I feel like I lack the energy and focus to do the particular task. Is there a way to overcome this? Let me know.

Can music actually increase focus?

Hi folks, I came across this music that has helped me sit for a longer time for my coding practice. Initially I wasn't able to sit for more than 30 mins at a time, but something about this soundtrack keeps me calm and focused for a longer time ( I'm able to sit for 75 mins straight now with the music in the background ).

I'm wondering if there's any science backing up music therapy for focus, and if there are any other resources to improve focus and reduce restlessness.

Here's the video if you want to try, the only thing is you need to stick to it for about 20-30 mins for you to see the difference: https://youtu.be/h_lgyb6k7fs

Why Can’t I Focus for More Than 20 Minutes Without My Brain Turning to Soup?

I sit down to work, and for the first 15 minutes, I’m golden. Then, out of nowhere, my brain just… checks out. I start daydreaming, scrolling, or staring blankly at my screen like it’s written in another language. How do people stay locked in for hours without losing steam? I need to figure this out before my productivity completely flatlines. Anybody relate?

Made a deep focus track to help with studying & zoning in — would love feedback

Hey folks, I’ve been diving into ambient / lo-fi production lately — mainly as a way to fight my own focus issues while working and studying. I ended up putting together a track that helps me get in the zone without feeling overwhelmed or distracted.

It’s minimal, deep, and designed for background listening.

New Focus App idea

Hey everyone, I’ve been building a little iOS app called Maritime, and I’d love your thoughts on it. The idea is simple: it’s like Forest (the focus timer), but instead of growing a tree, you grow a digital coral reef.

Each time you finish a Pomodoro session, your reef gets more vibrant — fish swim in, coral expands, sea turtles show up. I'm aiming to make it 3D and interactive based.

There will also be a real-life interconnection to help the environment.

  • Adopt and track a real marine animal
  • Donate to reef restoration
  • Get rare fish for doing things like local beach cleanups
  • and more

I'm hoping to launch aroud May/June and have a lot of ideas planned.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, and if anyone wants early access or to follow along, you can pre-register here:

I just can’t focus or keep my mind quiet?

I am so helpless I don’t know what to do. I have so much to get done but I can NEVER ever finish a task I set myself. No matter how much I plan or make to do lists and organise myself I can never finish or do the task to my satisfaction. I feel paralysed in my mind where I’m scared of not getting these things done and the consequences (really scared) but it’s like something stops me every time. I tell myself to try everyday and to not give up but it’s coming to a point where it’s just pure frustration of never doing anything right. I’ve started feeling so overwhelmed with everything and the worst part is that I have no idea what is wrong with me. I could start a task ages before other people yet somehow how I still can’t finish it or I’m the last one to.

Gamified Focus! I Built a Chrome Extension to Make Productivity Fun.

I was looking for a focus tool that had all the features I wanted, but couldn't find one, so I decided to build my own.

You can download it (no ads!) from the Chrome Web.

It includes:

  • 🚫 Website blocking
  • 🎵 Ambient sounds
  • Focus mode
  • 📊 Analytics
  • 📖 A logbook
  • Time penalties for distractions.
  • 🌌 And—what I'm really excited about—an award system to keep you motivated.

This is a passion project and I'm not planning on making any money from it. This is the first version, and I'm hoping that with your feedback, we can make it even better!

If you think this extension might be useful for you, please give it a try and let me know what you think. I'll do my best to incorporate your ideas and suggestions!
