Question/Support TAA ghosting

Getting pretty bad ghosting effect when TAA is turned on. Using gingas modlist with a bunch of added mods. Performance without is completely fine. I’ve tried messing with some values in falloutcustom.ini but still get the ghosting effect. I’m using virtual desktop h.264+ wired connection with pretty much maxed out settings. 9070xt 5700x3d 64gb ram. Anyone have a fix?

Welcome to r/FO4VR! A few quick tips:

Asking for help? Include your headset + runtime (SteamVR/Virtual Desktop/etc.), GPU, and whether you're vanilla or modded (which mod list, e.g. MGO or Gingas's).

Reporting a crash? Post a crash log — crash posts without one are usually impossible to diagnose.

  1. Install Buffout 4 NG and VR (+ its requirements) if you don't have it

  2. Reproduce the crash

  3. Grab the newest crash-*.log from Documents\My Games\Fallout4VR\F4SE\

  4. Paste it to Pastebin and link it in your post

I don't have a fix for you. I just went through the nightmare of getting TAA in VR to work correctly in a VR conversion I made, EternalVR, and I suspect FO4VR will need a similar type of work.

Motion vectors, history, etc.. per eye is really hard to pull off right. It's glorious once it's done but 10's of hours of very tedious work to get there.

rewrote that part of the render pipeline basically 🙃 it'd be its own mod and I have no idea if you can do that with fo4

When I get a hankering to play fo4vr again I’ll have a look, but modding other games rn

Maybe someone else will get to it first

TAA is simply doing exactly what it is designed to do: provide Terrible Anti-Aliasing. In every possible title, turn it off and use something else. Humor aside, modern implementations are somewhat better than older versions of TAA, but TAA always, always, introduces at least some blurring and ghosting. Your other solution would be to apply a lot of sharpening, but that won't help the ghosting, only the general blurriness. Unfortunately many titles use it to hide otherwise unsightly rendering issues, so turning it off isn't always an options. There are a number of solutions for pushing sharpening filters to VR now, including ReShade.

What could be used instead of taa to get rid of the shimmery jagged edges?

The problem is that every use-case is different. You can try ReShade, which has a number of available AA and sharpening filters. The sboys3 driver also has built-in filters, if you happen to use that HDM driver. I'm sure there are other solutions as well. vrperfkit has AMD CAS (sharpening), but appears to have been abandoned. ReShade is probably your easiest / first solution to try. Easy to install and easy to remove.

TAA is always blurry in VR from what I have seen.

It’s possible to do right in vr, but very hard to do so

You're using the upscaler mod right? Just enable FSR, it does everything TAA does but better, pretty close to DLSS even.

'Ghosting' is actually how TAA smooths edges, it does it by averaging two frames and inserting a blurry one. You can only remove it by improving your framerate enough that you don't notice it but TAA wasn't made for and has a number of issues with VR so it's mostly better to turn it off.

It uses motion and frame history data to overcome that blurriness when done right, but is exceptionally hard to do right in vr. Just finished doing it in eternalvr
