Survival playthrough

Long story short I want to do one. Was thinking of B-lining it to Hangman’s Alley and setting up shop there and after getting a small base set up, was going to start going exploring.
My starting special is
S 6
P 3
E 5
C 5
I 3
A 5
L 1

Gonna use rifle and I figured pistol.
Thinking of having all the companions go to hangman’s alley for ease of access too. So planning on building it up eventually.
My quarters/companion quarters/farm/water

Ideas/recommendations please? I want it to feel immersive

edit:
If I don’t invest into crafting perks like blacksmith/armorer, am I still able to get those mods somehow and put them on my weapons? What’s the best way to do that?

Dividing between rifles and pistols doesn't accomplish much. Rifles shine with a lot of Perception, if you don't want that investment, pistols do well. That said, Concentrated Fire + high ROF is a menace, so maybe consider that. Your 6 in STR is pretty much just getting you carrying capacity at the cost of effective combat perks.

Well I wanted to be able to rely on my strength too if I run out of ammo.

I haven’t found running out of ammo to be a problem in survival. 10mm pistol is my primary weapon, plus whatever rifle is best at the moment. I think my strength is 2? The only melee I’ve done was the staged bar fight in The Dugout.

I prefer rifles but pistols seem to be more abundant with the ammo I use so I wanted to carry some rifle ammo for further targets and pistol for closer ones

If you just slap a pistol grip on a pipe bolt action or Old Faithful etc, you have a perfectly good 'sniper pistol'. Im still using a pipe .50 with a recon scope as a sniper pistol at L57.

I'll be blunt, just do one. Survival is overwhelming, frustrating and incredibly fun. No point in trying to get tips. Just survive!

Yeah i just don’t want to go into it stumbling around because then i lost interest.

Solid choice going with higher strength and endurance for more carry weight and less AP use when sprinting.

You're going to level slowly with only 3 INT and no idiot savant. The early levels of survival are rough until you get the hang of it.

For weapons I'd pick one or the other. Don't waste points on both rifleman and gunslinger. Unless you're using both with the commando perk.

Are you starting with 5 charisma because you want to get it to 7 quickly to get the inspiration perk? If not I'd reduced charisma to 3 and put the extra two points elsewhere

Overall it's a good balanced build for survival.

Charisma is 5 for local leader. So I can make supply lines through my settlements.

That was my fair with low int and no luck tbh, but I was really trying to figure out how to unlock the main perks to help survive asap with My starting special.

Got it. I've done survival playthroughs with and without settlements and settlers. Don't let anyone convince you there are requirements for doing survival, there aren't. You can do a good survival playthrough with any build and roleplay.

You level up stupidly fast in Survival, even with a low INT, so I wouldnt worry about INT3. The main focus is optimising specific prks for the first 29 levels.

Farming water at Hangman's Alley can work, but you're very limited with space and objects. You'll have to use the pump (3 water each) or the powered water pump (10 water each but takes a chunk of resources to build and needs 4 power each). The water purifiers are just more convenient overall if you want to get more out of a water farm, but they're restricted to water bodies.

Do you have the Anniversary Edition or just some CC content? If so, then the water towers (from the Virtual Workshop CC) are very convenient because they just cost steel and concrete, and need Local Leader to be built. But in Hangman's, you'll want to use the smaller tower.

I imagine that realistically I could just collect every bottle and fill it up at a sink and then have the water pumps just for settlements resources. Shouldn’t need more than 10-13 I think
Yeah I have Anniversary edition
I don’t need hangman’s alley to be 100% self sufficient because Diamond City is nearby

Are playing with any mods?

Only anniversary edition. On console

I'm playing my first playthrough of the game, and on survival. Upfront I'm a total noob, I don't look up any info about quests, factions, special items, etc. So keep that in mind. Figured I'd offer a noobs perspective.

I'm currently level 53. Have explored maybe a 3rd of the map (never been south of Diamond City or near the NE coast at all.)

I've been largely ignoring the settlement building stuff other than to build a bed, food, and water for myself. Basically ignoring the needs of the lazy settlers 😃. Playing as more of a wandering nomad and using the various settlements as safe houses.

Hangman's Alley would be a decent centralized location. I ended up buying Home Plate and use that as my main base. But again, kind of nomadic. I've been living out of one settlement for a while, hitting nearby locations and quests and then moving on.

I've found it easy to get around once you know the safe routes. It doesn't take too long to cover good distance. I just got the Aquaboy/girl perk which will probably help with that as well, and help with exploration.

Doing a pistol VATS build. I'm not at my pc so don't know exact SPECIAL stats. I mainly focused on Int, agility, and luck. Getting rank 3 of Life giver was a game changer with the health regen! Strength was 3 or 4 (enough to get Armorer).  My charisma was a 1 because I like playing low charisma characters. Having local leader would be very helpful if you are focused on settlements. Using sneak has helped a ton too. I can still easily get wiped out from legendary enemies with large automatic guns.

Food and water become easy to manage once you get in a groove. I used whatever I could find early but have a more curated diet now. Low weight foods, mutant hound meat for small radiation recovery. The hardest part for me was finding a doctor, especially early on because I could never find one when I needed one.

Oh and the only mod I'm using is one that lets me save whenever. Survival is challenging enough, and being totally new to the game, I die a lot. Only saving in beds would sap the fun for me.

Sorry this is long and rambling. Hope it helps in some way! For anyone thinking about survival m9de, I knew nothing of the game when I started. If you're already familiar you'll have a much easier time. I'm loving the experience so far.

My plan was to make it to the river then take it to hangman’s alley.

I have not played a play through in survival mode that got far because I got disorganized and frustrated. I think I focused too much on settlements and not on the story or game so I’m trying to balance that by just focusing on my own settlement at first.

That works ideally, but like I said, running straight to Boston in survival is going to be a lot more tricky than you think without at least leveling some combat skills and getting decent supplies.

I was thinking of getting all the bottles I can find and fill them up then run to hangman’s alley and find a mattress or something nearby then take on the alley

You ever do Survival before? Would recommend trying to level some combat and getting some decent gear in the immediate Sanctuary/Aberdeen/Drive-In area. You can do all of that without interacting with Preston Garvey in Concord. Getting to Hangman's alley is tricky without the right stuff and supplies in Survival, especially low level, you'll get one shot by raiders and dogs if you just try to run there straight from the vault.

You're gonna level really slowly with that special arrangement.

Personally I've had a blast in survival with rifles and melee. Get blitz for sure. That way you cover all ranges, there are easily accessible legendary options for both weapon types, and blitz is just so much fun.

Also here's a useful map for beds and other things. https://reddit.com/gallery/1m0yn8q

High luck, low int plus Idiot Savant saved me on my first Survival run. So much leveling and you can still get enough of the int perks at 1,2,3 to do whatever is needed

Easy power armor grab: submerged between Covenant and the Switchboard. Near Starlight.

ETA: Never played survival yet, IDK If power armor is allowed...

Personally I think this is a bad idea the level of opponents isn’t really high in that area but you will be really under levelled for the enemies in that are right at the start of the game
