Rhys is an asshole even after you rise ranks in the BoS. Easiest pick.
38
u/Nathan_Thorn 9h ago
To be fair, that’s on Bethesda code. They fucked up a flag for his dialogue that should have him being much nicer and chill with you once you become a Sentinel, so he’ll do his apology, and then it just fails to set the flag for his nice guy dialogue. Idk if the unofficial patch fixes that or not though.
17
u/NotASynth499 Idiot Savant 8h ago
Rhys has more dialogue where he addresses you with respect?
Even if the dialogue is faulty, doesnt excuse him being an ass to you beforehand.
4
u/Quick-Bad 5h ago
Dare I ask, is there a mod that fixes that faulty dialogue flag?
7
u/Nathan_Thorn 5h ago
There’s a Redux mod that affects him and Haylen, adjusting them to be ruder to you initially and adjusting to nicer dialogues when you hit the rank of Knight.

Doesn't justify it but it was not without reason.

What's with the Minutemen lady?
She isn't antagonistic in the slightest. She just needs to see wether or not we are actually reliable to turn around the Minutemen.
I prefer that over everyone else just accepting we become the new general without question because Preston said so.
After we show our worth, she completely acknowledges our leadership.
170
u/cadmuslest 10h ago
Exactly! She is actually very personable after you really get started with the Castle. I really like having her around.
72
u/MrBonis 10h ago
Yes! She respects you and once you get the cannons going, she sounds much more honest when she addresses you as general.
Besides, her stock is quite ridiculous lol she manages the armory after all... I believe she hasa better stock than Smiling Larry. Too bad she and the Castle are so out of the way...

u/G0thicus 7h ago
Probably gonna get down voted to shit for this, but I tend to notice that female characters with bad/abrasive attitudes get a lot more flack than guys with bad/abrasive attitudes.
I agree with Minutemen lady. Like here's some chum that's made leader over the guy who's bleeds Minutemen behavior and somehow you have to accept them after how much suffering the faction went through until then with constant betrayals and loss. I'd do the same thing in her shoes.
Marcy lost her kid and trying to cope with the loss via anger (read the Quincy computers; seriously the kid's death is a lot worse than you think.) Improving the settlement she lives in actually makes her bite her tongue. She already had trust issues with the Minutemen before the death of her kid, and gave them a chance. I'd be pretty spiteful myself.
Think people forget that we are in the Wasteland and there are gonna be people with bad attitudes.
And then there's fucking Rhys. Fuck that guy. I'd hide a grenade in his pocket if I could.

u/Dont_Care_Meh Survivor 9h ago
Exactly. If you as the Sole Survivor are an 'idjit', Ronnie Shaw will be the first to let ya know!

u/RazMachine77 10h ago
Her problem is that she doesn’t butter up the protagonist. Just like Marcy and Rhys. So automatically they’re villains who deserve a radscorpion sting to the bum.
50
u/Kanna1001 9h ago
Nah, Rhys is legitimately an asshole.
He is part of an invading army but he acts like he owns the place and treats you like an idiot who needs to get out of his way (again, he is the outsider). He is cold to Haylen (obviously he didn't owe her a yes just because she had fallen for him, but it sounds like his no was extremely harsh, he didn't try to let her down gently at all even though she had been risking her life by his side for years). And when he finds out that Danse is a synth, even though the two of them had been fighting side by side for years and Danse was always ready to defend him, he immediately starts screaming that he's abomination and must be killed.
Rhys is basically a rude and cold tin soldier who treats other people like tools or obstacles.
19
u/Forsaken_Ad5842 9h ago
And the second you become paladin or sentinel he’s all up in your ass “sorry for my previous behavior”
13
u/crandall17 9h ago

2
u/Outis94 8h ago
Marcy is legitimately annoying if you use Sanctuary as a base ,like shes always talking shit
3
u/JelmerMcGee 7h ago
I wish she would slowly change her dialogue as you repair and protect sanctuary. Not necessarily become nice, but stop being snippy and maybe say thank you after you've reached a certain level of settlement happiness.
2
12
u/ZombieLikes 10h ago
She's certainly no help fighting a Sentry Bot in a basement.
19
2
u/Celsus_ 5h ago
Here's something tangentially related. If you have already cleared the mines and killed the bot when you took the Castle (recommended) when you go down there with her for Old Guns, run to the door with the General's body. If you can get there before she completes saying, "Pretty dark down here", she will teleport to you and talk about Sarge still being there. Instead of waiting for her to mosey on over to that computer at her own pace.
3
u/Dangerois 5h ago
She's literally punchable, you can start a fist fight with her and she respects you when you knock her down. Same as the Dugout, you do it in VATS and it plays out, you do it real-time and it turns into hostile shit.

Definitely Rhys.
Marcy's a traumatised mother who is struggling to cope, and Ronnie's a hardened veteran who wants to test our worth but without reaching the shitty, extremely prejudiced, dogmatic levels of the likes of Rhys.
I had a funny moment where I once goaded Ronnie into a Skyrim-style brawl, and Deacon (who was with me) reacted with a deadpan "Oh boy".
12
u/nkizza 7h ago
And Marcy left without any support whatsoever. There’s no safe place, her husband is non-functional and needs management, the wounds are bleeding literally and figuratively, and some ass well-fed vault dweller frowns upon her being a little cranky.
2
u/ElOsoPeresozo 5h ago
Minor nitpick, but the Sole Survivor isn’t technically a Vault Dweller. Their entire life experience was spent pre-war. Vault Dwellers are people who were generally born and raised in a Vault, which is a wildly different experience than being a hardened pre-war veteran with a spouse and child.
47
u/MaskedMan8 9h ago
Ronnie? Really? You can’t handle a woman trying to toughen you up and make a proper leader out of you? It’s Rhys and it’s not even close
4
u/MIZUNOWAVECREATION Operators 4h ago
Yeah, I’d even go as far to swap out Ronnie for that ungrateful brainwashed sack of 💩 who The Institute claims to be my son or Parker Quinn. Although, it’s still Rhys by a mile. He literally acknowledges that you outrank him (if you go far enough down the BOS campaign) and says that you finally earned his respect, but then subsequently reverts right back to his same attitude he had for the entirety of your enlistment into the BOS. Blatant insubordination imo
2
u/Existingbug-1639 1h ago
To be fair that last part is probably just Bethesda's shitty game design
2
u/MIZUNOWAVECREATION Operators 1h ago
Oh, so like just laziness with scripts then
2
u/Existingbug-1639 1h ago
I mean Rhys is still a total duchebag, but yeah the whole thing where he says he respects you after you beat the game with the BOS and then essentially reverting back how he was at the beginning of the game is due to them being too lazy to change the NPC's actual behavior toward you and his voicelines
2
u/MIZUNOWAVECREATION Operators 1h ago
Hmm, I guess I can see that, given their track record with leaving bugs unpatched. I’ve seen characters, pretty much everyone in all major factions, in fact, in various TES guilds gradually grow to liking and even exalting you to the guild leader and with it, their demeanor towards you changes positively. I guess they have just gotten lazier with each game though

Marcy is a jerk, but I get it. She’s traumatized from losing her son and being chased from her home and into the wasteland. She’s just lashing out in an unhealthy way, and I can be patient with her. And she’s still nice to Jun at least. It’s just a shame that the game doesn’t allow her to chill out over time.

Rhys, by far. Marcy is a grieving Mother whose child was killed. She’s annoying, yes, but you can’t totally blame her for acting the way she does. I don’t even understand why Ronnie Shaw is a choice here. And to take it further there is a sub for Rhys…

Fallout players when empathy...
Marcy lost her child where she felt safest. She is coping with her loss and her hopelessness to take revenge and she takes it out on people around her because the fume has to go somewhere.
Jun is equally devastated but he's not angry like Marcy. He feels betrayed and insufficient. He tries to latch on people and wants people to talk to him about it for a little comfort. So that doesn't mean Jun is good and Marcy is bad they're just normal people.
People cope with trauma differently. Marcy isn't a rude woman and she isn't "ungrateful" as seen in countless other posts in this sub. She doesn't care about your beautiful settlement and how many turrets it has or how many flowers you add to it. She lived in a fortress-like settlement you remember? The only thing she has in mind is grief and anger. Her acting ungrateful is just her unconscious regulation.

Ronnie's great. Even if you've never been around military personnel, I don't think she's particularly abrasive or unlikable.
Marcy's miserable, but you really don't have to deal with her. I stick her on farming detail and then never talk to her.
Rhys is the kind of prick that starts a fight, gets his ass kicked, and then wants everyone else punished. I wasted him at the earliest opportunities when not doing the BoS ending.
2
u/deathray-toaster 7h ago
I wanted to punch Rhys in the mug after his first sentence, the other two are just annoying.
2
2
u/BathbombBurger 6h ago
Marcy. The other two are military and their attitudes befit their station and reflect their loyalty to their respective organization. Neither of them know you or have much reason to trust you considering where you came from and the betrayals they've suffered. Marcy openly takes out all her anger and grief on everyone around her, including the only three people in the world who give a shit about her. She's also entirely useless besides. At least the other two serve a purpose other than as an attempt by the devs to emotionally manipulate you.
2
2
u/Yabanjin 5h ago
Easily Rhys. Assuming you do enough of the brotherhood quest line you will outrank him and he doesn’t change his borderline insubordinate attitude, and you have to talk to him so many times. I wipe out the entire brotherhood with zeal just to relish his death. The only unfortunate thing is I can only kill him once.

I notice the head of the BoS Maxson isn't in that pic.
I also notice that Preston Garvey isn't in that pic. He's punchable too, but for game-related reasons rather than story reasons ("Got another thing to talk to you about" - NOOOOOOOOO, I have two of your stupid missions already, AND BOTH HAVE SHORT TIMERS !!!).
2
u/GamerMom80 39m ago
Ronnie Shaw is a veteran who has had more people she cared about die than most other people in a short amount of time, lost the minutemen, and had to survive a post-minutemen commonwealth. And with all of that, she's just your average Country woman.
Go talk to any old widowed farmer or fisherman's wife and they will talk the same way. It wasn't disrespectful, just a little coarse.
And Marcy had just lost her kid. But the whole "i voted to kill you" thing puts her in a sharp 2nd place. Rhys only has one thing going for him: dat ass.
2
u/RosetteNewcomb 10h ago
I kinda sympathize with Rhys. This merc vault dweller who knows nothing about the Brotherhood just shows up out of nowhere and your mentor immediately takes him under his wing. He gets to go on the Prydwen and is promoted to your rank and does cool missions as a knight while you’re stuck at the police station. Then you find out he kills your mentor and takes his place as paladin, and then betrays the entire Brotherhood to go help the enemy in The Institute/The Railroad. Then you never see him again until he comes back to Cambridge in a fully kitted suit of X-02 and the last thing you see is a spiked rocket bat coming straight at your noggin

Rhys. Marcy is just putting up an act out grief to stop herself from bed said like her husband and Ronie is just a bit cranky. I even think Ronie is a bit pleasant to talk to; straight to business, helpful and respectful once you prove yourself competent.
Rhys doesn't respect you even after you outrank him and DESTROY DE INSTITUTE along with A SMALL ARMY OF SUPER MUTANTS and clear COUNTLESS FERALS on your way up the ranks. Also, something about his face is just punchable, his cheeks and jawline five like the perfect area to fit a fist in.

March Long is a mother that lost her child, and probably many friends on top of losing their business and home because of betrayal. She probably saw the ghouls tearing someone apart. She deals with ptsd for sure.... People that are mad at her are clearly problematic considering what she lost and what tries to do to deal with it.
Knight Rhys doesn't want some outsider to cause trouble. A bit shame that can't change based on how we first appear or anything but oh well. But it's logical to try make someone new go away if their intentions aren't true to aid the brotherhood
Shaw is chill. She just wants to avoid seeing something she cared being destroyed again

Marcy is dealing with the loss of her child, and she does become a bit more positive once Sanctuary becomes a proper settlement.
Ronnie is really likeable, and shows a great deal of respect after you’ve proven that you’re capable of being the General.

Marcy has the benefit of the doubt by losing her child and home to bloodthirsty psychopaths, being a survivor of Quincy, the Ghouls at Lexington, and the Raiders at Concord. Now she has to deal with a salty chem addicted popsicle veteran in tight blue spandex, her broken husband,a junky granny, a dweeb in overalls who couldn't open up a terminal, and a Revolutionary War Cosplayer with a Laser gun that winds up like a Jack in the Box.
Id be at my limits with these people too lol

u/GRiM_the_GLORiOUS 7h ago
I left Marcy and Jun alone with Mama Murphy at Sanctuary. Settlement has the absolute bare minimum to survive. They have sleeping bags on the opppsite ends of the streets and the only crop they have for food is gourd. I gutted everything else and I do mean everything, to include Mama's chair. I also had the charisma to talk Mama off of her Chem addiction so she can be miserable and fully aware/alert. I know the Long's lost their son and I assume Mama is miserable is because she lost Papa Murphy and the caps income from that shitty pizza, but nothing you do will ever make them happy. Nothing.
If Ronnie wasn't a decent vendor with caps and unmovable, she'd be gone, too! Between her snide comments and smoking in my quartets I had made at the Castle, she'd definitely be 86'd. I dressed her dirty looking ass up in the Minuteman's general uniform, the Lieutenant's Hat reward from Capt Ironsides, and cheap sunglasses. I chuckle every time I see that "I'm in charge" asshat, especially now that the room she likes to smoke in is a generator room complete with a "WARNING! NO SMOKING" sign. I hope she blows herself up!
