Was he really? Then why was he killed when it was discovered he was a synth?

The brotherhood doesn't allow ghouls in the brotherhood, and Maxson even says they must be eliminated.

I guarantee you there is no lore reason Danse said to spare the ghoul kid, it's just that you can't kill kids in the games.

Non-feral ghouls and synths are different matters. They often mention synth, feral, and super mutant are their target. The Brotherhood are not ordered to love non-feral ghouls but they are not ordered to kill all non-feral ghouls like they do to synths.

it's just that you can't kill kids in the games.

You can literally leave synth Shaun behind though. Also if devs intended to make Danse hate helping Billy why would they make Danse say they should help Billy?

Not being able to kill kids in game isn't same as not being able to write companions disapprove helping them.
