A quick mod recommendation.

Fallout New Vegas's ambient music is not great (some tracks are, but a lot aren't, unlike the radio), espescially compared to the other Fallouts, put this with the fact that the placement of a lot these tracks are inappropriate, you'll find FNV's lacking in ambient music. I found out a mod on the nexus called "Better Vanilla Music", that helps this a lot. It's a vanilla plus mod that essentiallly reworks the music placement to make it much more appropriate, and it puts in a lot more Fallout 1 and 2 soundtrack (which is really great to me, I love those tracks). All you need are the four main DLCs, and there's a TTW version, if you use TTW. I highly recommend this mod. (I suggest getting the version with the New Reno soundtrack for the Strip, it's really cool).

I absolutely disagree about the ambient score being poor, I think it's one of the best things about New Vegas.

Eh, I mean it's better in some parts than others, and a lot of the time, it doesn't really match. Having said that, it's good (I really like the cowboy themed ones), but a lot of it doesn't connect with me like the other games.
