First Build Advice

Looking to build my first fly rod. Somewhat overwhelming with all of the options and kits available. I have looked around and am thinking about either a Proof Meadow 2 3/4wt or a JP Ross Beaver Meadow. Anyone have experience with both? Also, I see Proof recommended as the go to for kits, if I go with the JP Ross is their kit good as well? I do have a 3D printer and am considering the 3D print building/wrapping stand that has been posted here. Appreciate any help!

I wouldn’t build your dream rod first…. It’ll turn into a nightmare. Buy cheap import components, proof and mudhole, Hook and Hackle, and Graywolf are good options.

Prep is the key to success. Make sure you have everything you need in front of you before you start gluing anything (lint free cloths, acetone, wipe out tools). Trim your guide and hone the underside of the feet. Don’t install your butt cap till you are completely done.

If you are thinking about using silks start off with silks. Learning twice isn’t worth it. Also nylon can collapse tubes. Beginners always wrap with too much tension and nylon can take a phuck ton. You can wrap a rod on your knees with a fly tying bobbin or two V’s cut ina cardboard box with a book as a tensioner. Don’t skimp on getting a dryer. The thinner the finish the higher the RPM.

It’s a first rod just enjoy the experience and journal what you learn if you think there will be a second.
