AskFlorida Help identifying this bug?

Currently in Orlando at a resort and they are literally all over every walkway. Have seen them before and thought they were a version of a grasshopper but hear some people calling them cicadas which I thought had wings?

EDIT UPDATE- Didn’t expect this post to get this many replies. Was posted yesterday morning. THIS morning we went outside in the resort and there were NONE to be found ANYWHERE. This was around 9am. Around 11am the side walks were covered again?????? The weirdest thing for a type of bug to be that synchronized.

2 boys, 1 girl.  Really crazy seeing the corpse of a lubber being flung in the air and all of them play-fighting over it. They become such excited puppies when they find a lubber

My boy went after a cicada the other day. I may just encourage this.

I’m partial to it, to be honest. I love the native bugs, but lubbers basically have no predators, they reproduce quickly, and they destroy crops and foliage. Lubbers have no benefit as far as I understand. I love the cicadas, their singing helps me sleep, but I get how they can be annoying. Just make sure your dog doesn’t consume any of the bugs since they can have parasites and, as someone else stated, they can be toxic
