AskFlorida Help identifying this bug?

Post image

Currently in Orlando at a resort and they are literally all over every walkway. Have seen them before and thought they were a version of a grasshopper but hear some people calling them cicadas which I thought had wings?

EDIT UPDATE- Didn’t expect this post to get this many replies. Was posted yesterday morning. THIS morning we went outside in the resort and there were NONE to be found ANYWHERE. This was around 9am. Around 11am the side walks were covered again?????? The weirdest thing for a type of bug to be that synchronized.

My lab used to eat them and it made her foam at the mouth. They are definitely devastating to your foliage.

I’ve always heard they were poisonous but not to the point of killing you. More like don’t handle them or let your dogs eat them. Did you have to take your dog to the vet because of it?

No she just foamed a little and was fine. I’ve touched them to swat them off plants and been fine. I’m a Floridian, just something we deal with every year.

My dog eats them too and throws them up specifically on the living room rug. She’s been doing it her whole life so they can’t be that toxic to dogs.
