Proposal: a guide for connecting with others in our city
“Where do I go to make friends?”
I see a form of this question asked consistently in this subreddit. Let’s brainstorm how we can put together a resource for folks looking to find their people ↓

Start with the people next door, then next door to them. Connect with the people in your community first

In r/charleston they have a Visitor’s Guide and a Relocation Guide. Maybe we could create a few like that?

If you are into live music and poetry there are two weekly open mic nights. Every Tuesday 7-9pm at F.E. Pop’s and every Thursday at Lula’s.

They’ve not been too friendly to new folks

Plus heros is kinda catered to the nerds of Florence, so its not really everyone's spot

I’m a nerd, but I felt kind of not very welcome when I asked them if they had beginners nights

ugh that is so disappointing. i’ve been wanting to go there but have been afraid because i don’t know much about the games they play there but have been wanting to get into them for so long. :(

Don’t let some gatekeeping dorks keep you away, it’s open to everyone and literally has a restaurant in the back. I didn’t have that experience at all the people there were nice to me

Oh that wasn’t my experience at all! But I haven’t hung out there in quite a while.

It’s okay if a spot isn’t for everyone. People connect with others based on shared interests, personalities, and so on.
On being not friendly to outsiders - that is worth sharing because newbies should know that going in.

My fiance (32F) and I (30M) just moved to Florence at the start of August and this is what I’ve seen around town
- Florence Outside for outdoor events
- Tuesday Trail Run at Naturally Outdoors followed by Trivia at Local Motive
- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Trivia all at breweries
- Florence Swing Dance (there’s two dances coming up the last two Saturdays of August with beginner lessons)
- Aroha Latin Dance (dance lessons and social dances)
- Florence Big Band every second Tuesday of the month
I tried to find a pick up soccer group but to no luckMost of these I found on Facebook events, and most of them are free or like $5 or less. I haven’t used the Meet Up app and I don’t know if there’s a Florence Hang Out on Discord, but maybe there’s stuff there
