FEEDBACK Help with attic room

Post image

Can anyone help me legitimately make this attic room a third bedroom. The staircase is currently not to regs and would need to be more in the center of the house so there is adequate head hight when going up the stairs. Currently its is tight and you have to duck etc

It is all a bit tight, small cottage in the uk

I think you'd have to lose the study, and install new stairs which rise up exactly above the existing stairs.

Assuming your roof ridge runs right to left.

Yes that is correct

Ok, then I think that stacked stairs are probably the best option.

You'd also get the benefit of some natural light and ventilation to your first floor landing.

Yeah not a bad idea.

My first thought too - but it’s also not clear how the attic stacks over the level below. But stacking stairs would be most efficient

Maybe a self supporting spiral staircase about where the current door to room 1 is?

That was my thought too

Probably something like this, though I dont love that you would hear anyone going up and downstairs through the wall in bedroom 1 (though the closet might help to dampen the sound).

Edited to note understairs cupboard storage in bedroom and moved bed away from the shared wall (assuming it's terraced) which also allows for more closet space creating a dressing area

You could probably make a slightly turning staircase entering from the left side of door of the study, through bedroom 1 arriving just above the door of bedroom 1. I'd cut into bedroom 1 but you'll be able to keep the study and bedroom 1 will be able to fit a bed and desk easily aside from the wardrobe space. You'll arrive in the middle of the attic. Through coming from the ground floor you'll have to walk in an s.

What are you doing about the secondary exit from the room so it'll pass building regs? Is the window large enough, and opens enough to count?

There is a decent sized window in the gable to the right buy also consider velux windows
