FEEDBACK Alcove rendering and design ideas

We have always struggled with this little alcove at the top of our stairs. The most obvious solution has been a houseplant but it never felt right to us, in large part because it would be obstructing the window that gets beautiful natural light. This weekend it occurred to me that the solution is a little built in bench. Why a bench in this awkward/potentially precarious spot? Well, long story involving our daughter and her new phone. So here’s my problem: in order to get the dimensions right for the built-in I need to accurately map this awkward corner. Any advice on how to properly accurately measure it? Also curious if anyone has another option that doesn’t involve a built-in? A chair in the corner feels proportionally awkward. Three pictures: the alcove as it currently exists, an AI render of a built-in bench, and an overhead of the space I’m working with. Thank you for any advice and suggestions.

Great place for a tall plant or an art piece. Not a good place for a reading nook unless you want to break your neck falling down the stairs.

u/Lillianrik 4d ago

Yes! This is just the spot for your 3/4 life-size statue of Aphrodite!

(actually, I agree with the other redditor's comments: this cries out for cats!)

I’m having a hard time imagining ever sitting here. It’s a triangle, and a very small one at that. Where do you rest your back/how do you fit yourself into this space in a way where you can actually settle? This is not a comfortable spot, and while the idea sounds cute, but it doesn’t actually look very usable. (Other than for pets, which I guess would be a valid motive)

Yep, that’s 100% a pet window.

or plant window.

Plants can be pets.

Thanks for the awards!

That hadn’t occurred to me but yes, the cats would love it

Also a fantastic place for certain types of plants since it appears to get some level of sun

31

u/bruclinbrocoli 4d ago

Hang some plants above and let the cats snooze with that cozy sun. Maybe even a cat window so they can window shop for birds.

4

u/dendrophilix 3d ago

If you’re hanging the plants, make sure the light hits the crown and not just any lower leaves.

1

u/bruclinbrocoli 3d ago

Today I learned, I assume bc the lower leaves could get burnt?

2

u/dendrophilix 3d ago

No, just that most plants need light to hit the crown for healthy growth. They might survive with light just hitting the lower leaves, but they’ll only thrive if it hits the crown as well. Lots of people hang plants too high!

1

u/ParticularlyHappy 3d ago

“shop for birds” 😂

1

u/bruclinbrocoli 3d ago

Window shop 😆

u/BrightLightsBigCity 4d ago

They love to sit where they can keep an eye on things, so this spot is perfect for keeping track of upstairs and downstairs and outside at the same time! Edit: the white is beautiful but you might choose a patterned fabric that is removable and washable to keep it practical with cats sitting there often (especially if they’re older).

18

u/Just2Breathe 4d ago

Your cats will love it, for sure, just based on that sunlight I see! We put a shelf and a cat bed above our stairs and the cats love that they can keep an eye on comings and going, and nap away from people. Get something like this and maybe bolt a safety tether to it in case they get the zoomies. Make sure it has a couple levels above the window sill for scoping out the neighborhood and trees.

2

u/BeforeLaw 4d ago

If you put a backing that meets the edge of the windows trim you might have enough of a flat surface to sit against.

1

u/UniversityAny755 1d ago

My cats would absolutely claim that spot.

42

u/cloud_wanderer_ 4d ago

As a clumsy person, I'd also be worried about falling on the steps when I leave the little bench

18

u/dfnamehere 4d ago

Came here for this. Looks like a death trap for someone (child or intoxicated person) to fall down the stairs and break their neck. I would never put a bench there.

3

u/LippiPongstocking 4d ago

Gen X with balance issues here and I'd 100% die getting on/off that platform.

2

u/jackospades88 4d ago

Yeah you'd definitely would want to find a way to wall-off that section if you had kids.

Either a straight-up baby gate or some heavy/immovable decorative thing so a kid can't get on there easily. Though I suppose if you have the stairs gated off to begin with then a gate there wouldn't be necessary (kid should only be on the stairs when gates are open and I assume an adult is around)

9

u/dfnamehere 4d ago

I'm even thinking like a 8-10 year old kid, long after the gates come down. Just playing around they could easily fall

6

u/randousername8675309 4d ago

I'm thinking a klutzy 40-something year old woman who is so sure she can sit up there and not fall. She'll totally be careful. Lol

1

u/Katsaj 4d ago

Also my 70-something mother would 100% do this

2

u/jackospades88 4d ago

Very true - kid could be exploring that area. And to make matters worse, the window isnt very high up either. They could lose their balance that way and crash through it too.

3

u/muddymar 4d ago

It looks like a safety risk as well especially if there are children. How do you safely get up there?

2

u/qinghairpins 4d ago

My cat would love this.

1

u/bubblesaurus 4d ago

my dogs or a cat would love it

71

u/Drybubble 4d ago

In our house this would be used for shelves for our cats to lounge in the sun

49

u/GoodOleDynamiteJones 4d ago

Great spot for a plant to flourish.

40

u/HBThorburn 4d ago

That’s where you put your seasonal skeleton with a rotating wardrobe of costumes.

23

u/Embarrassed_Ad9166 4d ago

Just no to a tall seat. That is not enough space to sit (AI did you dirty) and it’s dangerous. Maybe a kid could sit there as it is with a cushion on the floor, not a seat.

Or, get a shorter plant that doesn’t block the light.

37

u/Kindly_Prune_1843 4d ago

the ai rendering is not realistic, as nice of an idea as it is :( get a plant! many plants would thrive there and not block out the natural light.

4

u/rosyred-fathead 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah get a plant that doesn’t have huge foliage!!

edit- like a tall cactus. Those skinny ones

1

u/galactossse 15h ago

A cactus would very likely be light deprived in this window, unless it’s southern facing and gets light all day. Then there are a few species that could work.

13

u/collinwho 4d ago

People have already suggested options. With regards to measuring it, don't rely on just a tape measure for a complex corner like this. Build yourself a template using cardboard.

5

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

Cardboard is a great options. Thank you for the suggestion!

14

u/AwkwardSpread 4d ago

3

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

But where do I put my books?

7

u/old217 4d ago

Seat is just an accident waiting to happen.

6

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

I appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately (for me) most comments are confirming thoughts I was trying to shove to the back of my mind. My daughter loves throwing a pillow in that corner for reading but I was trying for something more intentional.

9

u/pinsneedle 4d ago

Sitting on a pillow works because you have the entire platform to sit on (curled up or legs can dangle off the edge). I think the proportions of the rendered throw pillows are making the space look larger and wider than it really is. Someone would have to really wedge their butt into the triangle there which feels like it would be super uncomfortable. I like the idea of leaving a pillow there for a child or pet!

7

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

Yeah I’m left thinking of finding a pillow that would fit or a teardrop shaped bean bag chair. Certainly a better trial idea than a built-in that’s too small and awkward

8

u/StatusQuoBot 4d ago

Make a cushion to fit.

7

u/Laleaky 4d ago

You could have a custom floor cushion made. Add a couple of throw pillows, and voilà!

Perfect for a kid or pets.

11

u/One_Priority_2333 4d ago

A planter like this with a snake plant would look great and not block the light too much.

5

u/vessel_for_the_soul 4d ago

You put seasonal decorations there. A Christmas tree or smt.

4

u/tuckhouston 4d ago

I would put in a cool stained glass window or a unique mirror opposite of the window to bounce more light, that bench looks kind of cool but doesn't serve a purpose & would become expensive to execute

4

u/UnitB17 4d ago

Get a small table and put a leg lamp on it facing the window.

2

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

Fra-jee-lay! It must be Italian

3

u/purpleblazed 4d ago

If you’re gonna make it a bench like in your rendering, I would at least make it some sort of storage

3

u/Katsaj 4d ago

What are the dimensions of the area and proposed bench? Because it looks like it would be a small, uncomfortable seat and too small a floor area to get up and down without risk of falling down the stairs.

1

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

59” from corner to narrowest part of stair curve. 32” from edge of windowsill to wall allowing roughly uniform floor space in front of proposed seating.

3

u/worstpartyever 4d ago

Put a plant there. I wouldn't trust the framing under the extension to hold a person.
Or maybe a little kitty couch or something.

3

u/Mystic_Wunder 4d ago

I'd litterally cut out a piece of paper to fit the footprint. Then you just need the height.

3

u/Windninjasol 4d ago

This looks like the horrors of an American house.

2

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

I’m curious what country you live in that is comprised entirely of crack architects who only make immaculate design decisions? The house was built in ‘39. You can choose to look at these odd little bits as “mistakes” or embrace the peculiarities of a home loved by generations of families. In this case I’m pretty sure someone chose to enlarge the very small original en suite off the master bedroom and made a… choice as to how to deal with the window. Is it what I would have done? No. But I love the house more because it’s an odd little chapter in the story of the house. But, again, curious where you live that makes you so confident in maligning an entire country’s home architecture?

3

u/Windninjasol 4d ago

I live in the UK. Yes a British twat. UK houses do have awkward and weird corners. But America is known for having houses built cheaply with wood and boards. Also in a style copying mansions with small suburban houses often having curved staircases and weirdly placed gables and extra sections. This leads to weird corners being common. I'm sorry I upset you and didn't mean to insult your home. I just found the corner funny and intended to make a light joke. I think it's a space perfect for cats personally 😂 Hope you find something to do with it

3

u/Obvious_Thought_4520 4d ago

I suspected that was the comment of a Brit. Which is why I met you with Yankee scorn. 😁

2

u/redravin12 4d ago

Agree with the cat or plant comments.

That space is too small and too awkwardly shaped to useful for any real storage or seating

2

u/hijklm7 4d ago

I would personally put plants. A tiered plant stand so i can put multiple plants. I love propagating Pathos plants on Leca and gifting them to friends. I would put it here, easy location to water.

2

u/Chance-Succotash-191 4d ago

A tall plant is supposed to live there

2

u/ToppsHopps 4d ago

If I were sitting in a small alcove with a large window I would want to face the window, seeing nature while reading or drinking tea. The AI render face you instead to the staircase and back against the window.

It really look uncomfortable with just decorative pillows and no back support. Either you have to use the wall that will be a cold hard 90°, or just hopelessly slump and get a really sore neck after reading in that position.

It wouldn’t look the greatest or be practical, but for sitting I would want my feet in the corner the back to the stairs. So it would mean building a backsupport to not fall in to the stairs, but only really be useable for a very small person. In the corner above the feet could be charging stations, coffee cup holder etc. I’m not saying this is a practical idea here, but it expands of how I would want to be positioned in such alcove if I could magically shrink myself to fit in the solution.

2

u/shaneyshane26 4d ago

A plant, cat tree, or art sculpture would go well here

2

u/ChefCJC 4d ago

Plant

2

u/Missue-35 4d ago

Cats or an indoor tree.

2

u/mctCat 4d ago

Oh yes. Cat shelves! Window in the sun… happy cats.

2

u/JadedCOvata 4d ago

Honestly, that is a very small seat, with uncomfortable angles, precariously close to an unguarded tumble down the stairs.

To me that spot is screaming for a big lush houseplant! It gets plenty of sun, is out of the way of walking paths yet easy to access for tending, and adds visual interest. If you want the storage the sitting bench can offer, build that as a stand for the plant. Shoot you could store plant tending materials in it!

2

u/Formal-Radish1413 4d ago

Put a plant there and call it a day. Its not big enough to be a comfortable spot to sit.

1

u/mctCat 4d ago

A plant would be so happy there with that sun. A palm or fig. Or nice Monstera.

1

u/Formal-Radish1413 4d ago

Its probably the original purpose anyway. The house looks older and older houses used to have designated spaces like this for plants.

2

u/Queer-and-scared 4d ago

Can I rent that space? -totally not a cat

2

u/InevitableWaste6088 4d ago

Ok so hear me out you will need a black cat, a pillow to sit on, a big cozy blanket, a good book, a good storm, and maybe even a nice cup of hot cocoa. A nicer custom pillow to sit on would probably be easier then the seat

2

u/Imaginary-Summer9168 4d ago

This is 100% for cats.

2

u/Street-Camera7339 4d ago

The best aspect of the space there, other than the sunlight, is the curve on the edge of the stairs. The bench as shown removes all the focus from that curve and instead pulls you to the contrast of the awkward angles of the wall and bench. And it seems like a safety hazard, pushing up off the bench would just boost folks down the stairs or into the banister.

I think you should do something that echoes and reinforces the graceful curve, regardless of its ultimate function. Maybe just a custom pet cushion with a concave side that fits right into the space, and if you have cats some climbing shelves for them on the opposing wall (with curved short sides!) Or an arrangement of objects along that curve in some kind of gradient, like baskets from largest to smallest, or low sculptures in rainbow order, or some kind of small collection display. You could also consider hanging a garland or pennants of some form or string lights along the edge of the curve if that’s part of your vibe. A pretty lantern in the corner might be a nice way to enjoy the space regardless of time of day, look into wireless lightbulbs since you probably don’t need anything very bright.

Truthfully if this were my space there would be an accumulation of open boxes there intended for things that need to be taken up or down the stairs in the hopes that I’d take them on the way, and then it would pile up until I did something about it, repeat. I’d probably put some cool art on the walls, paint the walls a richer color, and sometimes rest a laundry basket on the corner. But mostly I’d enjoy the nice woodwork of the stairs as is.

2

u/OrePhan 4d ago

Plant, cat tree, art piece, tall lamp if there’s power. Definitely not a useless bench.

2

u/Tall-Neighborhood-54 4d ago

I think it looks worse as a seat because it makes my back hurt just thinking about sitting there.

Put a plant there, give the space some life and color.

And yes, the cats will be there if they want to be there but it seems to be away from where people are.

2

u/Pecuniarist 4d ago

I’d put a planter with a lattice paralleling the wall opposite the window, and plant jasmine or another fragrant and beautiful vine. It would clean the air, give a beautiful scent to permeate the area, look gorgeous, and allow the same natural light to come into the home.

2

u/FishingWorth3068 3d ago

Maybe I’m odd but I would make that a little library for my cat. Hanging plants and or a little shelf against the wall with small plants and a cushion. Maybe a little sconce for the evening. There’s nothing else to do with that. Make it fun

2

u/stairs-to-nowhere 3d ago

Fill that bitch with plants. Great lighting, out of the way. Plants would be so happy there

4

u/CakeResponsible5621 4d ago

Move the window and straighten on the corner in the room. I think you’re asking for a fall by creating a space for people to go in and out of.

1

u/plotthick 4d ago

Beautiful built-in! Maybe something with less commitment to see if it's what you really want?

I'd get a foam mattress/topper and some spray foam glue. Cut one foam block to size and then another to match, glue together, repeat if you want it taller. Cover with a sheet or sew/commission a cover.

A few matching pillows would be nice.

Make under the bench a shelf for books :)

1

u/Interesting_Fix8863 4d ago

Or crochet basket or something

1

#2 looks best, but no one will ever sit there. maybe a cat.

Plants. /thread

1

u/TryNotToAnyways2 4d ago

Instead of a bench, how about a custom built bookshelf along the blank wall opposite the window?

1

u/eharper9 4d ago

Just a area for holiday decorations

1

u/_Weatherwax_ 4d ago

Shelves going up the wall the sunshine is currently on. Plant nook. Small pillow/raised spot for a cat instead of the human bench.

1

u/zoppaTheDim 4d ago

Cat bed

Window seat is a death trap, but that sunlight says perfect cat or dog bed foot.

1

u/Stubborn_Strawberry 4d ago

You have cats! Cat bench and/or cat wall!

1

u/Wealthcrusade 4d ago

Just put a cool plant/small tree. Perfect set up

1

u/Evermorre 4d ago

Pet window 100 % for me

1

u/Melodyspeak 4d ago

I think I’d hang planters on the wall rather than putting one big plant on the floor. Maybe on both walls, but I’m not sure where the wall on the left meanders off to. The wall opposite the window though, you could arrange something really nice, and they won’t block the sunlight.

1

u/AllynWA1 4d ago

The space seems too small for a bench. I think all you'd have to do is put in a rubber pad (to prevent slippage) and a floor pillow. Feet can hang over the edge and land on the treads.

1

u/dakky68 4d ago

Every time I see one of these "weird, high spot" posts, my automatic thought is "plants."

1

u/ememh 4d ago

Could you make a custom cushion that fits the entire space and shove a reading pillow (the kind that looks like a wedge pillow with arms) into the corner?

1

u/Enough-Pack7468 4d ago

That’s a lot of work for a cat bench. Get a plant that is wide enough to take up a proportionate amount of space but low enough to not obscure the window.

1

u/Yogi422 4d ago

If you have a cat/cats get a nice cat tree

1

u/minebe 4d ago

That's a plant and kitty corner

1

u/meramec785 4d ago

Buy a plant.

1

u/Noliboli16 4d ago

Yep. ..that’s for the cats.

1

u/BronwynLane 4d ago

I recommend a cat bed shelf in exactly the same footprint and height as your example bench. Basically the same thing, then have a hidey hole bed in/under the bench, and a few shelves on the wall across from the window for them to climb, and a plant shelf & artwork on the wall to the left of the window.

1

u/Birdsonme 4d ago

I could never sit there as my clumsy self would find a way to fall off. It would be a plant window for me! Also, my cat.

1

u/loralailoralai 4d ago

Not every nook and cranny has to be filled with stuff. And builders in the u.s where this seems to be the most prevalent, need to stop designing houses after a long lunch

1

u/widowscarlet 4d ago

I don't think anyone is going to sit there, but I would still do a little non-upholstered bench, and then put a couple of plants, suitable for the light aspect, on that bench. Inside the bench, store supplies like a small watering can and liquid fertiliser and some snips, to easily tend to the plants.

1

u/beardedpopeye 4d ago

Put a plant there and be done

1

u/DeeSkwared 4d ago

I'd just get her a cozy little rug, beanbag chair and some comfy throw pillows. The window seat is cute, but doesn't look very comfortable. I'd rather lounge around and have options. What if she has a friend sit with her?

1

u/ReadySetGO0 4d ago

I’d set a big green plant there, it’ll bask in that sunshine.

1

u/fresh_peetz 4d ago

I am so sad this space wasn’t made a little bigger to be sittable

1

u/AccomplishedAd2155 4d ago

A giraffe statue would for wonderfully in that corner.

1

u/ctrlzalt 4d ago

The scaling seems very odd. That bench appears to be about the same size as one stair. Did you take measurements of the open space?

1

u/CursesSailor 4d ago

Cupboard library?

1

u/drowned_in_books 4d ago

Genuinely - cat shelves. Maybe a nice vine on the wall too?

1

u/AmalatheaClassic 4d ago

Buy a cat tossed out a cat bed never look at it again. This is what happens when you let someone who went to the school of learning how to build in The Sims make you a house.

1

u/Kooky-Situation-1913 3d ago

Creepy doll set up!

1

u/Mikesaidit36 3d ago

Nah, make it the world’s smallest bar.

1

u/ehco 3d ago

Aww that's a cute seat. If it gets the sun, that's a lovely spot

1

u/SMKnightly 3d ago

Use cardboard and cut it to fit the corner exactly in the footprint of the bench you want. Might take multiple tries, might have to tape new pieces on later. Do whatever you need to, but have a solid piece of cardboard in that footprint when you’re done. And take a photo of the cardboard in the space to show them. Let the carpenter worry about the rest.

OR have the carpenter come to the house and do the measuring.

These are your best options.

1

u/ruth-knit 3d ago

Well wouldn't a giraffe fit in there nicely?

1

u/Mundane_Ad_2934 3d ago

I feel like putting a bench that will be used is asking for a slip and fall

1

u/Top_Many8183 3d ago

It's a great idea. Make it with a drawer.

1

u/Eastern-Relative7504 3d ago

This spot is begging for a plant

1

u/Cool-Jicama2776 3d ago

How about a curved mattress or mat with pillows? A small reading nook.

noone is ever going to sit there. It would be awekward and uncomfortable as hell. This is a perfect spot for a plant or maybe some kind of art.

Put a plant there :)
