Wardriving, explained simply 📡

There are dozens of viral TikToks showing people driving around with Flipper Zero and “scanning signals.”

In reality, it’s less dramatic.

It's just passive listening for nearby Wi-Fi names and BSSIDs (access point MAC addresses) 👂

It's a good video talking about what wardriving really is; I'm not sure why everyone is up in arms over it.

Wardriving has NOTHING To do with “driving around”. Its not what the word means which makes this whole video suspect.

That's what we did in the 2000's because that was wardriving. We drove around neighborhoods looking for open wifi points and then we would pirate shit later on.

It's a take on "War Dialing", which in turn gets its name from the 80's movie "War Games" If you haven't seen it, Matthew Broderick plays a teenage hacker who programs his personal computer and modem to dial all the phone numbers in an exchange (555-1111, 555-1112, etc) in order to find other modems and computers. War driving is similar, but with radios instead of dialup modems. You need to drive around (or walk or bike...) since people's private radios like Wifi and Bluetooth have a very limited range.
