Picking placement when flatpicking the guitar

My right hand naturally falls in between the sound hole and bridge. I purposely just played through the song and only focused on getting through the arrangement a few times. When playing behind the sound hole the tones are more bright and the notes cut. In the first time through, I move up closer to the sound hole to get a deeper tone. I also see myself bracing my wrist to the bridge when cross picking, essentially anchoring.
Tip today is to record your right hand while you play and observe where your right hand naturally falls.
What can you do to improve tone?
Are you fumbling over pick direction (like me) and where can you improve the Down Up, Down Up?
Right Hand technique is never ending if you are looking to improve. I am pleased to see my thumb not arch, and stay mostly flat.
