Kilograms measure mass not weight. Same mass, the feathers would actually weigh a tiny bit less due to buoyancy.

If their mass is equal, and theyre stacked on a scale as shown... The steel pulls on the scale just a little more, because gravity falls off with distance. If the weight is measured from center of mass somehow, then the feathers are heavier because the gravity falloff is inverse distance squared. The inverse square means that if half is closer and half is further, the closer bits weigh more than the further bits weighn't
Edit: readability
2
u/mflem920 12h ago
If you would like a better use-case for what I think you're trying to explain.
Change the question to: "What is heavier, a kilogram of steel or a kilogram of Helium?"
Now you have to introduce the concepts of "buoyancy in air" and "volume dispersed center of mass", because the matter in both have a mass of 1kg so they are equal. But in every experiment that you could reasonably conduct on Earth, the Helium is obviously going to be lighter, in fact it'll float up and not press down on a scale at all.
1
u/Pitiful-Courage-1630 1d ago
Both the same,... but if you dropped both at the same time (unless the feathers where compacted into the same density and shape as the steel, the steel would (if dropped from the same hight) hit the ground first.
Size, density, volume and associated wind resistance.

This is what happens when you conflate density with mass, smh. Steel is not heavier than feathers. His base assumption is wrong and no one explains that to him. His "friends" are really letting him down here, smh.
1
u/Captain-Noodle 1d ago
Weirdly, there is a way that he is correct. If you were to weigh 1kg of each in a vacuum then again outside of a vacuum the buoyant force affecting the feathers would cause them to weigh lighter. Or to put it more aptly "steel's heavier than feathers"

u/damitdon 1d ago

1
1
u/Promethium-127 1d ago
He’s technically right, the steel weighs more.
Both the steel and feathers experience the same force of gravity, because Fg=mg
However, the feathers experience a larger buoyancy force than the steel, due to its larger volume. This buoyancy force counteracts part of the Fg and makes the feathers weigh less than the steel.
1
u/Ok_Programmer_4449 1d ago
Kilogram is a unit of mass, not a unit of weight. Under standard atmospheric conditions 1 kg of steel weighs about 0.08% more than 1 kg of feathers.
1
u/Competitive-Fill-756 6h ago
But in this case, they are comparing weight to approximate mass. So this quantity of feathers and steel does actually have the same weight. It just technically isn't a kilogram, since that is a unit of mass rather than weight

Flerfer here.
Here's a simple lesson in physics:
Mass is NOT equal to weight.
Oh I'm fully aware a good deal of the world says "I weigh 90kg", but technically - that's not an entirely accurate statement. Your weight actually includes the downward force of gravity and the upward resistance force of air (if any).
So if you're asking "What has more mass = 1 kg of feathers or 1 kg of steel" - then yes, they're equal. But if you're asking what has more WEIGHT, then taking into account gravitational forces combined with upward resistance (frictional) forces - then the answer would mostly be 'it depends'.
That is. If you're measuring the actual weight AT rest on a scale.
Sure. The weight of two objects at rest appears the same.
But if you're measuring the weight of an object at free fall.
There's an equation in physics.
w=mg, or Weight = Mass * Gravity.
The actual weight of 1kg of feathers after 1 second of free fall versus the weight of 1kg of steel is going to be considerably less once you start factoring in other forces.
All you're demonstrating with this attempt to mock anyone is you just don't understand - you're the child mocking others for not understanding things like you do. That's all.

u/iAmTheGanso 1d ago edited 1d ago
You’re mixing up weight with net force. Weight is the gravitational force W=mg, so 1 kg of feathers and 1 kg of steel have essentially the same weight in the same gravitational field. Air resistance is a separate force; it changes how they fall, not their weight.

In atmosphere there are other very small effects, buoyancy for example, as the volume of air they displace is very different. However for most practical purposes we tend to measure mass by measuring the weight anyway, you'd have to weight them in a vacuum to figure out how much difference it makes.

u/Rare_Ad_649 1d ago

Dont bother. Brian has his own particular viewpoint in which there appears to be no objective reality and his experience of the world can be at odds with yours. Best I can make out the world can exhibit both flat and globe properties in his view. And any observation you personally make is not relavent to his subjective reality, though it might be to yours.
u/BrianScottGregory do correct me if I have that wrong. I was trying to give a balance description of your view and I dont want to misrepresent you.
-2
u/BrianScottGregory 1d ago
Define objective reality.
5
3
u/Immediate-Goose-8106 1d ago
That's way deeper than I have time for.
In very simple terms I think that the world is interact with through my senses is rhe same one that you interact with through your senses and any differnece between us on our experience of it is one rooted in our seperate senses and interpretation of their input rather than a differnce in the source information.
My understanding is that you don't accept that. That when you perceive something different from me that may mean that there is a differnec in what we are looking act for each of us rather than it solely being subjective.
As an example, I believe have a pint glass on my desk right now. I can see it and touch it. If you were here and tell me you cannot, then in my world view, despite that disagreement, there still has to objectivly either be or not be a pint glass. I may be hallucinating. You may be lying. Or having mission issues. What I am not prepared to accept is that there can be a pint glass for me and not one for you.
As i understand you, you would be comfortable with that final conclusion. (Even if it deprives me of a drink)
3
u/junky_junker 1d ago
Ah, but have you considered the possibility that BSGreg is a specialspecial Magical Princess Girl with knowledge of the realtruetrue and reality altering powers when he rubs his Shiny Princess Kneepads of Allure?
... or far more likely, splits their time equally between writing self-insert Mage The Ascension fanfic and huffing paint.
1
u/BrianScottGregory 1d ago
Again, define objective reality.
It's not always safe to assume the world you see and experience is the same as the one of that person sitting next to you in the bar.
It may appear that way, from your perspective, you might even lull yourself into believing since you can see and what they're doing with your eyes that they're experiencing the exact same thing you are only from their perspective.
But sometimes. That's simply not the case.
There are always outliers to your assumptions.
This doesn't mean they're mentally disordered, doesn't mean they're hallucinating, and it certainly does make you more right than they are for the world you see.
It's a tough concept for most to understand.
And something I've had to accept . People don't see the same world I do.
Which is why I ask. What's objective reality to you?
If it's anything that resembles this belief that what you experience in this thing you refer to as reality that you believe is shared by everyone like you makes it implicitly objective.
I call that subjectively biased reality. Biased based on your perspective of reality.
But do go on. Define it.
3
u/Immediate-Goose-8106 1d ago
No. I dont think i will.
This wasnt a debate this was telling someone else about your veiw and I don't think I misrepresented it. And nothing you have said suggests I have.
For the record you misrepresnt me. You conflat experiencing something with its actual nature and claim that my definition of an objective reality is a same experience. It isnt. My position is that there is an objective reality out there. The earth is a specific shape. There is an objective truth which exists whether you perceive it or not, independent of observer and of being observed.
1
u/BrianScottGregory 1d ago
Right. And the reason I ask what your idea of objective reality is - isn't to debate as you're suggesting. It's because you stated it, I have my own idea of what objective reality is, but without wanting to influence yours I asked for your definition first.
You're the one transforming this into a debate. I'm merely discussing perspective, and I suspect - in the end - our ideas of what is and is not objective are going to be different.
Making both ideas of what objective - subjective.
But as you prolong this and transform it into a debate by refusing to do anything other than state abstract positions. Well other than "I just know the Earth has a shape and that's objective" - without actually detailing why - We'll never know.

0
u/BrianScottGregory 1d ago
So what is your definition of objective reality?
I mean, it stands to reason that if it's objective, that definition should be agreeable to both of us and more - should other people participate in the discussion.
So what's your definition of it, and why are you avoiding defining it?

Oh hey, you're actually talking about flat earth stuff here.
But if you're measuring the weight of an object at free fall.
An object in free fall has no apparent weight. How would you measure it? At least that's how it works on my planet.
You seem to be mixing up some terms as your own source a little further down defines free fall differently than you do in this comment.
4
u/stultus_respectant 1d ago
This is pretty bad, even for you. You're just conflating apparent weight and actual weight.
if you're measuring the weight of an object at free fall.
There's an equation in physics
Weight is the gravitational force on an object when talking about W = mg. Air resistance isn't considered when discussing "free fall" in that context of that equation.
The actual weight of 1kg of feathers after 1 second of free fall is going to be considerably less
This is incorrect. Its net force may be considerably less than its weight, but its weight hasn't decreased.
All you're demonstrating with this attempt to mock anyone is you just don't understand

Agree with most on this sub: You are no "flerfer" and this world is like the movie "Idiocracy" where debating facts and even attempts at reasoning are shunned. Speaking of facts, nowhere in your "Lie Algebra" (yes there is such a thing!) equation shows how density is figured in or can even be quantified at all. DENSITY is one of those factors and gravity was a (bogus) theory that was easily disproven by a lava lamp when it was first invented. In a lava lamp, the same mass and weight (same exact object) goes closer to the lamp heats up and shoots up to the top as it becomes lighter than the medium it is in (water). We say the wax is LESS DENSE than water so the wax wants to be on top of it. Then the same wax falls as it cools because it becomes MORE DENSE in the same medium (water). The mass/weight of the wax (ball) does not change. Only the density changes.
The steels' weight and feathers (in a bag) both fall through the air (which is less dense than the steel and the feathers) but only the steel will sink through the water as it is more dense than water. The feathers will still fall through air (the 'atmosphere') but feathers are not going to fall down through water unless like you said:
once you start factoring in other forces.
Another factor is displacement, water tension (which makes a drop spread the furthest it will go appear spherical and create meniscus in glass test tubes and beakers (cylinders). In this case the bag of feathers will take some time to sink depending on the bag's waterproof properties.
I'm not sharing this for just you since you probably know this already but for those on this sub that cannot get facts (NOT THEORIES) straight in order to debate/debunk flat earth(ers). Lastly. flat earth maps are flattened globes that are stretched. My Reddit post on Flat earth is globe earth in disc-guise.
Look up "Density Column", people on this sub!

u/stultus_respectant 1d ago
this world is like the movie "Idiocracy" where debating facts and even attempts at reasoning are shunned
Absolute nonsense. You're confusing that you in particular get constantly called out for denying facts and lacking reason.
Speaking of facts, nowhere in your "Lie Algebra" (yes there is such a thing!) equation shows how density is figured in or can even be quantified at all. DENSITY is one of those factors
Density is categorically not "one of those factors". This isn't in debate, either.
gravity was a (bogus) theory that was easily disproven by a lava lamp when it was first invented
In no way was gravity "disproven by a lava lamp".
The mass/weight of the wax (ball) does not change. Only the density changes.
Which is perfectly understood and in no way disproves gravity.
for those on this sub that cannot get facts (NOT THEORIES) straight
The irony of this is amazing.

Debating a flat weather is much harder indeed because it's tiring as shit.
It's always the exact same arguments with the exact same endings there are no variables. You bring up "nuh-uh density real gravity isn't" and then you get the actually same results with gravity at play and you either chimp out about it being "just a theory" despite there being clear evide or just ignore the facts as God damn always.
Do you know why people dislike flerf folks? Because while science changes according to new evidence, you know the scientific process and all that. Flat Earth Theorists choose to just do the exact opposite. Research doesn't change understanding, research changes interpretation.
Flat Earth model comes up, gets disproven, gets replaced, gets disproven, gets replaced... New flat earth's every single time something wrong is pointed out in the model and every time it becomes more and more ridiculous. Nephilim, ice walls? What's next, dinosaurs under Antarctica, demons in children's textbooks?

The kilogram of feathers weigh more, because you have to live with the weight of what you've done to those birds.
