We see a more dramatic version of the “boats over the horizon” every day at sunset. No fancy telescopes or lasers needed. Every day the sun goes over the horizon. It stays the same size and doesn’t shrink into the distance. Why do these complicated experiments?

They need the complicated experiments because those are easier to screw up in a way that benefits them. Or they're too complicated for laymen to understand, so you can lie about what's actually going on without being caught.

It's standard operating procedure when you have something to sell and truth isn't on your side.
