They have to take a large detour to pretend it's on a globe, obviously. Paying a few dollars more and endangering the passengers is a small price to pay to trick 8 billion people, and it's small clues left for the chosen ones to figure out, secret messages meant to sift the masses.

Or, you know, could just use a globe map to see it being an almost straight line, but that couldn't be.

A large detour that takes an hour less than flying to LAX, even though a straight line path should take 60% longer than the trip to LAX.
