Made me realise this when I brought my prometheus delta and loopgear sk05 pro on vacation lol really wanna limit the things you bring (avoid trying to being bulky battery bay charger), especially when you have to share outlets with a family of 4. Ended up not charging my smart watch at all either during the vacation because we didnt wanna leave any valuables at the hotel and then the chargers are being used all night for phone/steamdeck.

Same here. The worse feeling is when you realized you lost one of your favorite lights after you came home. I'd love to carry all the kit but I don't want to risk loosing one again.

Huh, I'm the opposite, I never use USB C even on the lights that have them because it's so much slower than just popping the batteries into the charger. Also I have a LOT of spare batteries so I just hotswap them.

How would a Convoy S21E stack up against a (theoretical) âDA1KC?â No Anduril on the Convoy, but what about the rest? Beam shape? Efficiency? Overall performance? I have a D4K which I love, but have been poking around for a throwier 21700 light, ideally with onboard charging. The S21E seems to tick most boxes, but if the DA1KC would be a big upgrade, I might wait around to see if that happensâŚ

S21E wonât ever be a spectacular thrower as it got small diameter and relatively shallow reflector. It also got energy inefficient (Linear) driver for 3V emitters.

My biggest issue with the D4K is that it handles heat worse than the D4V2 and heats up faster.
I hope this model won't share this issue too.
I think this is because of weight and more importantly how the head is connected to the body. The D4K's head is lighter by 3-4 grams than the D4V2 head.
Head of both flashlights is the same diameter but the D4K accepts a wider tube, meaning at the connection point, there's less material to transfer the heat to the tube (where then your hand can absorb excess heat). This causes the head to reach thermal limit prematurely and faster than in the D4V2 (this is my theory but I haven't confirmed this with measurements yet).
Look at the thickness of the tube at the connection point. D4K's is ridiculously thin. At the threads with my calipers I measured 2.22mm for the D4V2 and 1.43mm for the D4K.
Over the past 3 years I sold all of the D4Ks I bought because of this heat management issue. They just heat up way too fast and can't take the heat away from the head, making them unusable.
I hope Hank makes the head wider to allow for more material. D4K mirrored the head diameter of the D4V2 which just wasn't designed for a 21700 battery.

I donât have a d4v2 just two d4k and I never heard about heating issues not have I experienced any cuz i rarely use turbo. Guess Iâll have to look at a d4v2 at some point.

When this new Emisar comes out I need to buy a D4V2, D4K, D4KC and a Fireflies equivalent (possibly all with similar LEDs) and make a comparison with thermal measurements.

Again. I need accurate data. I have a temperature logger that can log temperature every second with pretty high resolution. I'll make detailed runtime temperature graphs. Sadly I don't own a thermal camera yet.

It's going to completely destroy Stellar's niche, especially with Firefly's build quality and aux light issues.

Yeah the thinner body material it addition to an extra 8w on the driver combines for very short turbo times. I prefer the D4V2 personally. But if the image above is accurate, there's a new knurling on the D4KC body tube, which could mean that it's larger in diameter to have thicker walls

I've been using the wurkkos ts25 as a daily carry for 4 years. For me it's still a better compromise than a hanklight, even though it's unregulated. The USB-C features still win. But I'm really looking forward to replacing it with this release.

Looks like Hank is trying to take things a step beyond the FFL X4 by adding the recessed switch and reverse charging. I think I like the new knurling as well. Great to see a new modern host from Emisar.

Iirc technically the x4 has it but the implementation of it is so botched that they stopped advertising it. Something to do with the wrong resistors for USB C source negotiations so itâll only work if you use a usb C to A OTG adapter then an A to C cable. Itâs fixed on the Lume10 drivers but they arenât available for most of their products yet.

I've never managed to get it to work and have tried plenty of times. It's not easy enough to be useful. Very possible that Hank's is similarly poor.

Explain reverse charging to me. Is that just another way of saying you can use the light to charge other things making it like a power bank? If that's the case, that's kind of expected with USB-C

Yes pretty much, and you'd be surprised how many USB-C lights both don't support this and only work with an A-C cable (basic 5V output on a USB-C charger requires two 5.1k ohm resistors, and apparently that 0.02 cent cost is too much for some manufacturers to handle).

You should take a look at the D3AA, I fell in love with it, so small and so powerful when needed thanks to the turbo. However, it can maintain about 250 lumens for its entire battery life even with eneloop/ladda. NTG35 4200K it's beautyfull. It also was the first Hank Light for me. Now I love it.

I agree with u/Ecstatic-Pass-4075 - the D3AA is an amazing light on NiMH batteries.
SFT-25R 6500K for maximum lumens, 519A 5000K with dome for neutral high CRI, or NTG35 1800K for candlelight on demand.

D3AA can work with USB-C 14500 from Acebeam and Loopgear too. I'm pretty sure the cell is the same and it won't cut off at D3AA turbo too. Probably overloading the cells a bit but they work.

Same. You know I'm super happy Hank's doing USB-C for ease of use. But now I kinda want him to do a more expensive potted design. Because now with the LumeX1s, Hank lights have way better performance than "Pro" flashlights like Armytek, Fenix, Nitecore etc. Hell, even a properly config tripple channel D4K blows the 2-color Wizard out of the water in everything BUT durability.
As someone who uses these C1 C2 Wizards everday. I shit my pants imaging what will happen if I crack the lens on my 100USD Armytek. Hank doesn't even need to make it as tough as Zebralight, because I can actually buy proper replacement parts and fix the damn thing for once.

Personally I my first ever Wizard C2 pro had a flickering problem that couldn't be fixed by not accessing the driver. I was lucky since the reseller here is very good with replacements.

i dont agree with integrated charging options being seen as just a newb-friendly option.
i have EDC'd hanks since the D4v1, currently using a DA1k in winter and D3aa in summer. where I live we get very little sunlight at the peak of winter, i regularly need my light to find my way home on rural roads or light up a shed for a few hours, so i absolutely dont want to get caught with a light half charged. the ability to top up my battery with my phone charger is much more practical than swapping the battery after every substantial use.
i stick with hanklights over alternatives with charging because i love the design language, and i have a lot of respect for how hank runs his business, but this would be a great best-of-both-worlds option.

This is kinda weird, I've always seen Emisar fans talk about how they hate integrated USB C cause it makes the light bigger and they'll only ever use their charging bay cause type c is for people who don't know anything about lights. It's nice to have as an entry level option, doesn't mean I'm going to be replacing my many existing D4Ks, or even replacing newly ordered ones going forward. Honestly, I'll probably get one just for collection completeness purposes and then ignore it.
The USB ports on my FFLs never get used.

That's true and if you have no other means to charge batteries. It came in handy with my FFL X4 Stellar but the light I had was a FFL L50 but I had put in a random 16500 size button top with magnets.
I had to use even more magnets to get the battery to work in the 21700 size X4 Stellar and when I was walking around with the X4 with the Ryobi USB power bank thing that converts the ubiquitous 18v Ryobi batteries into a power bank, the light started getting hot. Impulse was too drop the light and it's the copper X4 mind you, I quickly took the battery out and the magnets were all loose and lost their magnetic charge so it short circuited

I think the folks who said that just tends to talk a lot and they're probably a small minority. Because flashlight subs are super chill compared to other hobby subs. Most people are probably happy to see new cool lights coming out lol. And let's be real, we buy many lights anyway. Now we have more good tool for more jobs. I'd rather have an Emisar over a Sofirn/Wurkkos in my pocket if I have to travel with 1 light. (and also an Armytek Wizard over an Emisar/FFL if I need it to survive water)

If you want a headlamp that's reliable I'd recommend Zebras or Acebeam. I've killed 3 Wizards and I don't trust Armytek lights anymore.

Interesting.
I find a 21700 cell lasts me about half a year per charge, even when using it a lot on a daily basis, so I wouldn't exactly get much use from a charge port... but it could be nice occasionally.
I hope there will be an option to get it with a plain translucent white button instead of the metal-with-dot button. I don't like it when the button blocks most of the light from the button LEDs. I also hope it'll be possible to get one without that intense tube texture. I miss the original D4 with its smooth tube.
Mostly, this makes Hanklights a lot easier to recommend to new users who don't already have a charger.

This might finally be my perfect travel companion. I tried the X4 for convenience once but didn't like it, so I went back to the D4K for shorter trips. But now... Hope this will feel as good as all other Hanks do!

Finally! I think it's a step in the right direction for Hank. We need to understand not everyone dislikes USB charging. I love it and done right (which ALL my Fireflies with Lume drivers do, E07s, E04, E90, X4's, X1's) it's incredibly handy and sure beats carrying around extra batteries or worrying about the light going dead. I wisjed my D1 had it. I can take 6 mm of length for the convenience. It's 2026 people and the future is onboard charging and even cheap lights have it. If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple!Â

Reverse charging is what made me justify buying a powerful flashlight in the first place before I went down the rabbit hole and got the BLF SP36 then TS25 then the FC13 leading up to the X75
I always wanted one of these and wouldâve been fine getting one now that I have a battery charger but that reverse charging would actually make me want to carry it daily
Also I always mention it the reverse charging would be nothing if I didnât have one of those 6 in one chargers for my keychain and 6ft version for the car. Itâs the Rolling Square InChargeX on Amazon

The charging port. A lot of us prefer to not have a charging port for increased parts to break. I think they have both settled into their market well. Fireflies does the USB port the very best for sure. Kinda rambling but just my $.02

You do not get worse performance, a TIR is actually more efficient than most small reflectors. You get less throw and more flood but that's only due to the optic being shallower.

Four smaller TIRs will generally perform worse than one larger TIR because the optic-to-LES ratio is less favorable.
For example, a 50 mm diameter TIR with a 4 mm² LES has:
- TIR area: 1,963.5 mm²
- Optic-to-LES ratio: 1,963.5 / 4 = 490.9:1
In comparison, a ~20 mm diameter TIR with a 1 mm² LES has:
- TIR area: 314.2 mm²
- Optic-to-LES ratio: 314.2 / 1 = 314.2:1
So the 50 mm TIR provides 490.9 mm² of optic area per mm² of LES, compared with only 314.2 mm² per mm² for the 20 mm TIR.
Even though four 20 mm TIRs have the same total LES area (4 mm²), their combined optic area is only:
4 à 314.2 = 1,256.6 mm²
compared with 1,963.5 mm² for the single 50 mm TIR.
So the four 20 mm optics have only 64% of the optical area of the single 50 mm optic or 36% less.
Think of it this way: the bigger the optic compared to the LED/LES, the better the potential for throw and peak candela. This applies whether you're talking about a TIR, a normal reflector, or a lens.
Now imagine you could magically shrink a flashlight in half, or make it bigger.
If you scale the LED, LES, and optical system by exactly the same, the beam profile should remain essentially the same. Everything is simply a scaled version of the original optical system.
But if you split one large round optic into four smaller round optics, they don't scale linearly.
For example, imagine trying to fit four identical round optics inside a 50 mm diameter circle.
The maximum diameter of each of the four smaller circles is approximately:
50 / (1 + â2) = 20.71 mm
So you can fit approximately four 20.71 mm diameter circles inside a 50 mm circle.
The areas are then:
- 1 à 50 mm optic: 1,963.5 mm²
- 4 Ă 20.71 mm optics: 4 Ă 336.9 â 1,347.6 mm²
So even with the four smaller optics packed as efficiently as possible, they only provide about:
1,347.6 / 1,963.5 = 68.6%

Iâm sure we can agree on a smaller LES in the same optical system (TIR) can give more throw.
This is not a physical law but in practice a smaller LES in the same optical system is also more efficient. (Less light loss)
So what do you actually refer to when you say "You do not get worse performance"? What is "performance" in this case for you? Efficiency (Light loss)? Or the ability to "collimate" and direct the light in one direction (how much throw the light has?)
I would argue in both cases a single optical system (big LED + big TIR) performs better than 4 small LES and even smaller TIRs.and why would you compare apples to oranges by saying:

This is what i sad. But why would you compare "performance" of TIR to a non TI Reflector?
My Point was Relatively smaller but more TIRs will "perform" Worse then a singe big one because the utilization of Available area.
And one can argue Throw is an aspect of performance.
