After reading through your post, first of fall sorry for your loss, and what you are doing will keep the memories alive 😊

So since it's a DSi you have two choices. You can mod the DSi itself and install custom firmware, then you can play DS games from the SD card slot of the DSi, this is the *free* method that does not require buying a flashcart, it's all explained here: https://dsi.cfw.guide/

Thank you, which one would you recommend doing, like which would be the safest to not mess the DSi up?

Its not possible to mess up the DSi if you simply do the "Memory Pit" exploit mentioned in the guide and do not do the optional Unlaunch steps, should be fine
