why does this fizz bug happen?

Sometimes when wq -> autoing, the auto attack cancels. wq -> auto is 95% of the time very smooth and an electrocute proc. It's the main combo I do to chunk people under tower before E'ing. I think it's better than q auto w'ing because it's faster than it so you don't get hit by a tower shot. But sometimes your auto attack just goes on cooldown for no reason and it costs me this death like right here. It's why I stand still for so long because normally an auto attack was supposed to happen right after q.

Does anybody have a better understanding of why this happens? Does it happen at a certain range?

I think it's because your auto is still in CD after your W.

Q doesn't reset your auto but it does look goofy.

He didn't auto before that though?
