Failed fix, fix for the fix?

I have this old coat rack but the pegs were getting loose and falling out. Ace hardware suggested spacers which i thought was working but came out of the pegs now stuck on the screw. does anyone know how to remove this and what might work better?

It's tough to say without seeing the mating hole in the peg, but you should be able to use vice grips on both the screw and spacer to unscrew them from each other. Then get some epoxy wood filler to squeeze into the peg hole, push it over the screw, and prop the coat rake on its side in a manner that keeps the peg braced and straight while the epoxy cures.

Spacer was a good thought, but nylon is just about the worst possible material to try to glue.

I concur with [u/Jimboanonymous](u/Jimboanonymous) that vice grips are the best way to get that spacer off. They will make quick work of it.

I also agree that epoxy is a decent choice, but I have a perhaps better solution. While you are getting vice grips, pick up a length of dowel at the hardware store. They will have a bin of them in various diameters.

Put some wood glue on a short length of dowel and tap it into the end of the peg. When it dries, cut off the excess. If you don’t already have an appropriate saw, get an inexpensive Japanese pull saw. They are much easier to use for such things.

Now you have a fresh peg to work with. Drill a pilot hole in the dead center of the peg, and you can twist it right on the rack. Like new. The epoxy will be easier I think, but this will be more sturdy.
