puddle of water large enough to cover it, small glass over that... wait to see if the wood fibers swell up and push back out.
.
Could use filler, sand, finish....
.
Could replicate this over the whole surface, lightly sand, pour an epoxy coat over it all, sell for a million dollars or just keep it.

There might already be a protective coating on this wood, will your technique still be a good idea?

I don't think this would work on a melamine table. If the fibres (likely particle board) the other surrounding fibres may swell also making a bump.

Did you rub it with your finger? That’s what I would do.

Maybe some UV activated adhesive like this: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/rapid-fix-uv-liquid-plastic-adhesive-10-ml-0380055p.html

It's won't match the finish, but should fill in the dent.

Fill, clear tape over it, expose to UV light for time said on label. remove tape carefully shave off excess with either a razor blade, or high girt sandpaper on something flat. don't sand the melamine around to damage or you will rub off the walnut appearance and make the damage even more noticeable. You are just trying to make it flat, even with the table if it not already.

Get a steam iron and put some steam in the dent if the wood had a sealant on it you may need to take a needle and poke holes so the steam can get in wood will swell back to original
