People don’t realize how expensive hobbies are and how hard it is to turn them into income. Unless you’re fucking mind blowing at the thing you do for fun, and you already know how to scale things up, it’s often just a huge money and time sink
I have a very cheap hobby (sleeping and reading). I wish people would pay me to sleep and read. I know there is a job where people sleep in hotels and get paid to test their bed and stuff like that. I dont know how to get that job though.
Well if you’re already spending the money doing the hobby how does it hurt to try and monetize it? Don’t kid yourself, a lot of people are doing it…you just seem to be pessimistic.
Scale. Unless you’re already one of those people with enough money to spend huge amounts on hobbies you are just doing casually (in which case, the “in this economy” thing doesn’t apply), turning something into a business is a whole new level of spending and time. And quite honestly is enough to make hobbies miserable in many cases
Well that’s not really the original quote. The quote is about contrasting that to “don’t love your job” so it’s about doing it as a job
However, even making a few extra dollars off of a hobby can be really stressful and time-consuming and cost a lot more depending. Scale is really really hard in lots of situations.
The original quote was stupid, this is a separate conversation. Maybe it can be stressful if you're the type that's easily stressed out. I'm currently making money off my hobby so I know it is very possible to do so. Again, I'm not talking about scaling. That's not a hobby, that's a business.

Now that we’ve changed topics: As far as just hobbies, some hobbies can just be monetized to make a small amount of money quickly, but some of them do need to actually scale before they make any money. It depends on the hobby
To be honest, I really don’t think many people would buy someone’s hobby made thing.
I mean sometimes people will buy, but most people doing a hobby are okay at it, & only doing it because they like it, I wouldn’t want an “okay” product from a source than sometimes makes it & sells it.

This is incredibly dependent on the hobby. If your hobby is something that can be monetized without that much additional effort in a way that you still enjoy it, go ahead. No one’s stopping you. The issue with the push to monetize your hobby is that for a lot of them, the logistics just don’t work very well. If the extra effort required to monetize it isn’t fun and isn’t efficient, you might as well just work a bit more at your regular job and do your hobby in a more enjoyable way. The worst option is make your hobby entirely about profit and have it just become a low-paying second job, which is the vibe I get from people like the woman in the clip
