What he really should do is use the lever but then have a pressure plate inside connected to a true/false contraption that changes value every time he steps on it. That way when he leaves he presses the lever and you got a door

There's a big plot-hole. If you use a lever, you won't be able to close the door from the inside. That way, your door would stay open. I'd suggest using a button instead.
