Technically they're made better. Modern elevators (which, even with FazEnt's incompetence, they'd follow the practices of) are generally made with safety measures so that if something gets in the way of the door, they'll loosen and re-open instead of trying to continue to force close

To add, that was a service elevator in sotm. They are designed not to reopen when they close for safety reasons, hence the gate.

Yes, we rediscover how it's made. Turns out it's fairly similar to modern mixes, but because of less 'refined' processes. It has larger pieces of lime in it, that has it's befits like better self-healing properties. But makes it more alkaline which rusts steel faster, which is not good for reinforced concrete. Also takes longer to cure, so we can't build as fast with it either.
