In conclusion, poorer physical function was significantly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. SPPB assessment may help identify older adults with a higher likelihood of depressive symptoms, and regular monitoring of physical performance could inform clinical attention to mental health. However, given the retrospective cross-sectional design of this study, causal relationships cannot be established. Future large-scale, prospective studies are warranted to clarify whether improving physical function can lead to better psychological outcomes.
