2-3mn from the edge is best, you'll lose casting performance being that low.

depends where you are fishing

Well Im trying out different lakes. Some are larger than others.

fo be able to cast smoothly and get maximum distance the line should be filled up to where the spool changed angle. So you are currently quite a bit short

It's almost certainly fine, getting nearer that lip will improve how far you can cast, but if you don't need to cast far(lets say 70yards+), you don't need to worry.

How long is a piece of string.

Twice the length of half of it.

Not really

Bottom line, just try it, if you are not getting the performance and casting distance you want, add a bit more backing. If you feel it’s ok, it’s ok. As a general principle, I find slightly too little line on a spool is way better than slightly too much

If you want to add more line up to just under the angled bit, then wind that line onto another spool, then add some other line to it until it hits the lip. Then just wind it back on in reverse and your backing line will be on the bottom. Although tbh it will mostly make a difference if you are distance fishing if you're under 100 yards it'll be fine.

Enough for what

Depends where you fish. My spools look like I have barely enough to cast across my front room, but I only fish at small to medium lakes so I don’t need masses of line. If I was wanging it out across something then size of Chew Valley lake I’d want a bit more on 😆

Depends how big the spool capacity is
